your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

OSSEO orioles 71,
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST lakers 46

Osseo came out of the gates hard and sharp setting the tempo and pace to pick up their first win of the year. Osseo led 8-0 going to the line, hitting a 3, and scoring a lay up off the SW press. SW took a time out at 6-0, but nothing stopped the speedy Orioles from finding the basket. SW had problems. SW scored on their 7th possession of the game. Osseo scored four possessions in a row with 10-2 run to make it 18-4. SW did cut it to 20-10, but Osseo again had a burst with five straight scoring possessions again a 10-2 run to make it 30-12. Osseo did push it to 20 before SW scored right before half to make ti 40-22

Osseo had another big burst with a 6/7 scoring sequence and a 12-6 run. In that run Kylie Gottsman had 8 points as she dominated the paint. Osseo built it up to 65-37 wit about 5:40 to go. The deep bench then got their chance. Late in the game SW picked up a bench technical on coach Robert Grace. He was displeased with a call in front of his bench. Osseo had three points off that possession. In the end the deep bench scored six points to keep the gold standard. Osseo had 71 points in 70 possessions.

NUMBERS EXPLAINED
player, points, possessions, pp100, floor %

OSSEO
STARTERS
Brianna Olson, 1, 3, 33.3, .333 speed to burn. a motor and does her job to distribute the ball. another main responsibility was to disrupt Fitz which she did. hustler, plays with abandon. RF: not a shooter, but doesn't have to be.
Erika Calkins, 5, 2, 250.0, 1.000 Good shooter, good speed.
Jennie Sunnarborg 13, 14, 92.9, .500 big body, runs the floor. not afraid to get hit. good hands. RF: needs to finish even if getting hit. starts to low on the block. When she turns --no angle. Should start on the hash above the block. could get stronger upper body
Melissa Henderson 12, 9, 133.3, .556 nice catch and shoot player. good follow through, good balance. RF: needs to be aware of the 3 point line, took long twos. left holding the ball on a throw in.
Jennifer Oligmueller 6, 9, 66.7, .333 another good athlete. good form. RF: needs to finish on contact. needs bigger base inside.
BENCH
Danielle Mangen, 7, 5, 140.0, .600 a pesky guard that harrassed Fitz. another athlete with straight line speed. intense. RF: small, needs to get physically stronger.
Kylie Gottsman, 13, 9, 144.4, .667 reminds me of Ashley Langen former Kittson Central player now at North Dakota. Big, strong, great hands caught a questionable pass down low, soft touch, keeps ball high on rebounds. will not be moved once she establishes position. can get up and down the court, not zippy like the guards, but runs better than expected.
Marny Ferrara 8, 9, 88.9, .500 another guard that can run and run, and also can shoot. RF: should now where the 3 line is. took long twos. needs to get physically stronger. faked no one but herself.
Kendra Ware 0, 2, 0.0, .000
Casey Lynch 3, 3, 100.0, .333 canned a three.
Jenna Ewing 1, 2, 50.0, ??? The reason the ??? is because she made the technical, but was not credited with the scoring possession because Okonkow ended the possession. So no scoring possession for her. by the way speedy.
Chiamaka Okonkwo, 2, 1, 200.0, 1.000 great athlete. great leaper.
Amy Hildenbrand, 0, 1, 0.0, .000
Rachel Wiinanen 0, 1, 0.0, .000

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST
STARTERS
Mayumi Hara 0, 4, 0.0, .000 guard RF: needs to get stronger with the ball.
Britta Syverson, 6, 5, 120.0, .600 post player. RF: didn't want to test her shot against the quicker inside players
Melissa Fitz, 23, 21, 109.5, .524 has the game and flow. Good outside shooter. good driver, can penetrate and dish. RF: had 8 points in the first half, but didn't really bring the ball up when clearly she is the best ball handler they have. Started to assert herself more in the second half when she scored 15 points. also did not keep her follow through up. favors the scoop on lay ups which I don't think is strong to the glass.
Laura Miller, 10, 17, 58.9, .294 inside player. RF: had problems with passing execution. traveled when dealing with the ball in the press.
Desiree Driver 2, 8, 25.0, .125 small post, physical, RF: did I mention outsized.
BENCH
Hanne Goetz, 4, 5, 80.0, .400 scored on a give and go.
Sarah Schwie 0, 2, 0.0, .000
Carly Jaffee 0, 3, 0.0, .000
Laura Maltby 0, 2, 0.0, .000 RF: has a shot that I haven't quite seen before. She is right handed, yet initiates shot from the left shoulder. I am confused on how it all comes together.
Grace Theisen 1, 1, 100.0, 1.000
Bench 0, 1, 0, 0.0, .000

TRENCH PLAYER
Kylie Gottsman

BY THE NUMBERS
Osseo
71, 70, 101.4, .457
Mpls SW 46, 69, 66.7, .333
Osseo joined the 100 pp100 club with this performance tonight joining four other teams. Osseo ruled the boards, they had four cracks on the offensive end a couple of times. Loose balls belonged to the Orioles. The speed, and quickness of the guard, and of their post players may cause havoc in the NW Surburban. In my publication I can already see that section 5AAAA pick is wrong. If Osseo plays with as much energy and executes like today, they will be playing deep into March.

A couple interesting sidebars:
Osseo won the state 4x100 last year and all four players are on the varsity. 2 start: Olson and Henderson and 2 came in late: Ewing and Okonkwo.
Casey Lynch is a sister to a couple of players that were around when I coached there. Tina and Tammy.
Taking tickets was Deanna Podratz, whose daughters Jamie and Lauren played during my Osseo time. Lauren was the starting point guard on the 2000 state championship team.

I have finished adding the information to all the Rogers Breakdown Tip Off games.

Next up: tomorrow morning with the news around the area.
