LAKEVILLE SOUTH cougars 49, DE LA SALLE islanders 46

Lakeville South trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, and came back to beat host DeLaSalle 49-46. Free throws played a big part in this contest.

It was a tale of two halves. DeLaSalle took off early 9-1 with Aaryn Booker scoring five of those points inside. LS, after scoring the first point on a free throw by Katie Barta, was mired in an 8 possession drought. But there was a trend already developing for both teams--the free throw line and the after effects. Barta missed her second shot and LS got a second crack, but didn't convert. That happened three times in the first half for LS. DLS built up their lead to 20-9 on a three by Frances Wehrwein from the right wing. LS went into another five possession drought, but three point possessions helped give them some resurgence toward the end of the half. Barta again made the first, but missed the second free throw. She got her own miss and Jade Geif delivered two free throws later. Then Gabes Schroeder nailed a 3 from the right side for her only points of the game. LS closed to 27-21, but Jameila Hersia finished off the half with a driving lay up for a DLS lead 29-21. LS had 8 made free throws in the half, DLS only two.

It was almost a flip of the first half to begin the second. DLS started 0/5 and 1/9 with their possessions with only three turnovers. LS, on the other hand, went on a 12-2 run capped by a pair of Geif free throws to take a 33-31 lead with 12:37 to go. Jameila Hersia scored on a give and go for DLS to tie the game. Then LS's Megan Oxton scored her only points, with a 3 from the top of the key. Laura Kalbfell added two more with a steal and lay up for a 38-33 LS lead. On DLS's next two possessions Akilah Hersia delivered a trey from the left corner, and then drove the lane, scored and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Anna Kovalchuck was there for the put back and DLS was back up 40-38 with 9:40 to go. But another trend at the line was developing....missed opportunities. DLS missed a potential 4 points already at the line. DLS was in the bonus and double bonus early this half, but could not capitalize. LS took the lead for good on a steal and lay up by Laura Kalbfell 44-42. On DLS's next possession a missed shot and scramble for the ball left the ball on the right side line, but the original call for DLS's ball was overturned and LS had the ball with 5:27 to go. At 5:09 DLS's Aneshia Starks was fouled 88 feet from the basket on a double bonus situation, but was slammed to the ground and left the game She left the game, not to return. Anna Kovalchuk took the free throws. She made the first, but Bridget Finke for LS took the rebound. Each team went 3 possessions without scoring. Then LS's Finke knifed through the lane on the left side for a lay up. Akilah Hersia was fouled, but failed to connect on either toss. Two possessions later the same issue hit Aaryn Booker at the line. All in all DLS left 11 points at the line in the second half. Barta added one more free throw with 1:32 left for a 47-43 LS lead. Rachel Booth stepped out and nailed a huge 3 from the top of the key to cut that lead to 47-46 with under a minute to go. LS ran time off the clock and Laura Kalbfell was fouled by Booth which happened to be her 5th foul. LK made both free throws for the final margin with 20.1 seconds to go. DLS had a couple of cracks at a tie, but Kovalchuk's first attempt missed. Carissa Wolyniec rebounded and kept the possession alive, but DLS only had 4.5 seconds left to work it. Kovalchuk again took the trey, but it was no good and LS picked up a tight win. LS converted 11 free throws in the second half despite not reaching bonus until 1:32 to go in the game. DLS only delivered one free throw in the second half.

In the first half DLS was golden at 103.6 pp100 and a .464 floor %. It dropped by half in the second half to 51.5 pp100 and .242 floor %. LS played man defense and really tried to take the high low game away. Still the free throw line was the 800 pound gorilla in the room.
One other factor was the lack of a transition game for DLS. LS had 6 lay ups, DLS had only one basket in transition.
This was LS first win in games decided by 5 or less. They had lost two overtime games earlier this year.
