DICK'S SPORTING GOODS HOPKINS TOURNAMENT
1ST PLACE GAME
CHAMPLIN PARK rebels 76,
CRETIN-DERHAM HALL raiders 67
Champlin Park won the first Dick's Sporting Goods tournament in Hopkins. Both teams were within site of each other all night. Early on CDH had leads of four twice, the last coming at 19-15, CP took its first lead at 23-21 on a lay up by Heather Sampson after Natalie Gigler got a rebound. CDH was mired in a 2/14 offensive possession stretch, six each of missed shots, and turnovers. CP also had a drought with 8 straight possessions at the same time. CP stretched that lead to 34-28 late in the half. Then a critical charging foul by Alyssa Karel changed the complexion of the game. It was her third foul with and it came with under a minute to go. CP didn't score on their next possession, but Karel would have to play a bit less aggressively in the second half. Sheila Otto drew a foul for CDH and made her first free throw, Molly Geske got the rebound and kicked it out to Carolyn Dienhart for a three to make it a four point possession for a 34-32 lead for CP at the half.
CP came out and had a 7-0 run to start the second half for a 41-32 lead. Jenny Theisen had five of those points with a pair of free throws and a 3 from the left wing. CDH started the half with 1/8 on their possessions. CDH took their first lead in the second half at 57-55 with five straight scoring possessions. Sarah Hendricks and Molly Geske each had four points in CDH's 10-2 run. Gigler tied it up on the next CP possession and then Theisen took the lead on a rebound basket 59-57. Geske nailed a three on CDH's next possession as the game see sawed back and forth. On CP's next shot, Theisen was fouled with 5:04 to go, but she was fouled behind arc and delivered all three free throws. That started a 7-0 CP run which culminated on a Laura Bruce shot to make it 66-60. Alyssa Karel cut the CP lead to 68-67 with 1:09 to go and was at the line for a free throw after making a steal and lay up. She missed the free throw and Ashley Witte grabbed the key rebound for CP. Ashlynn Fuller drove up court and was fouled by Karel, her 5th, with 1:05 to go. CDH did not score the rest of the way and CP cashed in eight free throws to make the final margin 76-67.
