BURNSVILLE blaze 48, EASTVIEW lightning 44

Burnsville trailed by 8 in the second half before rallying to beat Eastview at home 48-44. Abby Rittenhouse had 21 to lead Burnsville, 15 in the second half.

Neither team was hot as the game started. It was 3-2 with 5:13 gone in the game. Burnsville had a run of three scoring possessions in the middle of the half to take a 13-7 lead. Burnsville led 17-13 when Eastview went on a 10-0 run with the last four possessions consecutive scores. Eastview led at half 23-18. Eastview scored 10 points off second shots, and 6 points off turnovers in the first half.

Eastview came out with a Sam Mehr three to make it an 8 point lead. That would be their biggest lead. They held that lead three separate times, the last time at 32-24. Burnsville started to climb out of the hole when Kelsey Marcks nailed a three from the right wing on a blown assignment. Eastview bumped it back to a 36-30 lead on a Mehr Steal and Jenny Wesser lay up. Burnsville tied it at 36, but Eastview had one last thrust to lead 40-36 after a Cassie Shepherd corner shot from about 15 feet out with 5:26 left. Sarah Wiens was fouled on the next Burnsville possession to cut the lead to 40-38. Burnsville closed with a 12-4 run. Of their last seven possessions five ended up as scores. Abby Rittenhouse, who was working the high low, usually low, was high at the time, stepped behind the arc and launched a swisher for three and the first Burnsville lead since 17-15. Eastview momentarily reclaimed the lead with two Shepherd free throws after she rebounded a miss by Moore. On the next Burnsville possession Rittenhouse drove in from the left elbow unmolested. Eastview answered with a Moore drive down the lane. Burnsville took the lead for good at 45-44 on a pair of free throws by Rittenhouse. Rud missed on the other end after Eastview worked the ball around and around. Molly Duehn rebounded and Burnsville took a time out with 1:07 to go. They were only able to run off about 13 seconds when Moen was fouled by Rud, her fifth. Moen made the second for a 46-44 lead. Mehr had no luck from behind the arc and Dove rebounded. Moen was fouled again with 27.5 to go, but missed both tosses. Eastview had a chance to tie it up, but Brittnye McSperron's pull up jumper didn't fall, Duehn rebounded and was immediately fouled. She delivered on both free throws with 0.1 seconds left.

TRENCH PLAYER

BY THE NUMBERS
Burnsville 48, 63, 76.2, .381
Eastview 44, 62, 71.0, .339

3s: Burnsville 2, Eastview 1
Made Free throws: Burnsville 16, Eastview 9
Bench points: Burnsville 14, Eastview 10

Burnsville struggled on offense, except for the high low game, negating the outside perimeter shooters. Eastview's defense made it difficult all night. Burnsville's 1/3/1 zone and 1/2/2 zone kept Eastiview out on the perimeter and the Lightning's out side game was tepid. However Eastview had too many second shots on the night, and scored on turnover transitions.

Burnsville finishes strong. In the last half of the second half Burnsville #s looked like this:
18, 16, 112.5, .563.
Eastview last 16 possessions ended:
8, 16, 50.0, .250.
Now the trick will be to get Burnsville to play the full game with that kind of numbers.

I am adding a new feature tonight. It relates to defense. Many folks have noted that defense is not measured individually. This is a start. It measures: defensive rebounds, steals, blocks that lead to a change of possession.

BURNSVILLE
Rittenhouse 9
Duehn 8
Moen 5
Wiens 3
Dove 3
Van Bokern 2
Safranski 1
Gardner 1
Marcks 1
Totals 33

EASTVIEW
Moore 11
Sheppard 6
Mehr 5
Rud 4
Siebenaller 2
Wesser 1
McSperron 1

Again this is when the player wraps up possession. It doesn't measure what may have happened. For example Mehr had Wiens most of the night and didn't allow her to do what she does best. But for getting the possession wrapped up DaNae Moore was the best on the night.

Also if we look at the team totals by half in the first half Eastview had 15, Burnsville 13. In the second half Burnsville had 20, Eastview 14.

Next up: tomorrow morning with the recaps from throughout the area.
