OPENING DAY SPECIAL #1
Today, in honor of the opening day of girls basketball season throughout the state of Minnesota, I am having a few guest bloggers post their views on the upcoming season. I will follow with #3.

Leading off will be Coach Teas----Today's subject

MAKING THE TEAM
It can be tough if you are a senior who is not a starter or first off the bench. A coach really does not want or need a player who is unhappy on the team. It is fairly common for these kids to drag down others in their unhappiness with not getting quality playing time.

So, if you are a senior and younger players may be better than you, the only way you can really help your team is to be a great practice player and positive leader from the bench. If you can do that you can be a great person to have on the team.

For younger players, you make the team by impressing coaches. You do that by hustle, by doing on the floor things that coaches try to get you to do. Coaches do have favorites. They like kids that understand roles and fit in. They like kids that know basketball is a team game. Coaches do not like to see whining, laziness, to hear excuses and to see cliques develop.

The tryout period is a very difficult time for players, parents, and especially coaches who do not enjoy making cuts. Good luck to all of you. I hope you have a great season no matter what your role.
