IOWA ELITE I 62, ALL IOWA ATTACK 60

In an upset of a mild sort, Elite fended off the Attack and moved on to the finals. Elite had a six point lead with 2:05 to go, but saw that lead melt to a 59 all tie with a minute to go. They had more in the tank and at the line, to take the game.

Both teams scored on their first possession with a Tia Mays scoring on a post up for Attack and Clare Duwellius knocking down a trey from the corner for Elite. Elite took early leads in the first quarter, the biggest at 8-6 after a rebound basket by Ashley Arlen. Jamie Elbert gave Attack their first lead since the opening possession with a shot from behind the arc. Attack outscored Elite 7-2 the last three minutes of the quarter to go ahead 14-10.

Elite struck first in the second quarter with two free throws by Micha Mims. Attack outscored Elite 9-0 over a two minute stretch to build a 25-17 lead. Elite was stuck in a 6 possession drought. Clare Duwelius struck for her second trey of the quarter from the left wing to stop the bleeding. Elite outscored Attack 7-3 the rest of the way. Attack led 28-24 at half.

The big change came in the third quarter. It was the best of times for Elite, It was the worst of times for Attack. Elite opened the quarter with a 6/7 scoring sequence, knotting the the game at 34 on Emma Krieger-Kittle's transition lay up after an Attack miss. Elite was doing its damage in the paint. They had four points off second chances, two on a post up, a transition lay up, and two free throws on drives in the paint. Elite was running on missed shots and they had six points in the quarter on transition off of missed shots. For the quarter Elite had a 126.7 pp100 and .667 floor %; Attack checked in at 68.8 pp100 and .313 floor %. Elite was up 43-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Attack spent the fourth quarter trying to close the gap, but everytime they were within sight, Elite would slip back ahead. Tia Mays closed the gap to 45-44 with a rebound basket for Attack, but the next possession Lindsey Cain popped one in on the left wing. Elite did stretch the lead to five at 51-46 on two free throws by Arlen. An Ally Jensen basket cut the lead to 51-49 with 3:22 to go, but once again Elite answered with an Arlen basket and then two free throws by Mims on a drive. Elite led at this point 55-49. That lead held up at 2:05, when Attack mounted their last rally. Zimmerman started it off with one free throw, but then got the rebound as three Elite players knocked each other off the ball. Zimmerman finished that possession with a basket and the score stood at 57-54. Mims added two free throws to push the lead back to 59-54. Then Jensen drained a trey to make it a two point margin. A time out at 1:24 by Attack set up their defense. Armstrong got caught in a double team and turned it over to Mays who scored on the lay up to tie it at 59. On Elite's next possession Armstrong drained two free throws. Katelyn Sunde drove for Attack and was fouled. She made the first, but missed the second free throw. Arlen made sure their was no doubt on the rebound. But Mims turned it over on a pass and Mays once again was there for the steal. Elite was up 61-60 with 31 seconds left. On the next Attack sequence Zimmerman got caught too far under the basket with no angle at all. She had to lean back and the ball was tapped and batted around with Morgan Hamner picking up the vital rebound. Armstrong again was fouled with 7.3 seconds left and she made the first, and missed the second. Mays picked up the board and a deep runner by Jensen bounced off for an Elite upset win 62-60.
