MN ALL STAR GAME FACTS & NOTES
I only counted one other member of the press at last night's Rochester "Clash of the Classes," and that was Donny Henn of the Rochester Post Bulletin.
Kachine Alexander was icing her knee after the AAA win over A. Her knee has not had the work with her foot injury, but she will be ready to go this afternoon in the championship.
Here is the breakdown of players that were in the state tournament this season
AAAA: 4
AAA: 5
AA: 4
A: 5
And if you include all state tournament experiences:
AAAA: 7
AAA: 8
AA: 5
A: 8
If you look at D1 recruits
AAAA: 6
AAA: 5
AA: 1* for volleyball
A: 0
I think the team with more D1 players has some advantages. A few years ago class A won the tournament with a 62-48 win over AAAA. On that team there was some D1 talent with Katie Ohm of Elgin-Millville, Ashley Samuelson of Underwood, and Kierah Kimbrough of BGMR among others.
One reason the games are so high scoring this year: 20 minute halves. The previous record for points in the current format was last year in the 3rd place game with AA reaching 76 points in overtime.
The 101 scored by AAAA is not the top mark however. AA scored 118 vs A in 2002 at Hopkins (118-65).
Rochester first hosted in 1999.
From 1984 to 1999 it was Metro vs Outstate. In 2000 the format changed to the four classes. In 2000 and 2005-2007 the winners played off. From 2001 to 2002 AAAA would play AAA twice. It changed in 2003-2005 with all classes jumbled together and the teams were colors.
The first MVP of the event was Jenny Johnson of Armstrong now the current Edina coach and the coach of AAAA this year. She had 18 points in the first game won by Metro over the outstates 51-50.
Thanks for the great help the readers of this site provide. You are my eyes and ears.
Next up: around the region. Later today: reports on the championship and 3rd place game.
