CHAMPIONSHIP
IBCA SELECT I 68, IOWA ELITE I 55

IBCA Select I had a 20-11 third quarter to put distance between themselves and Iowa Elite I. Indy Uhlenhopp had 8 points in the critical quarter and had four defensive wraps in the early portion of the quarter.

Both teams were off at the start of the game with Elite going 1/6 and Select 1/7 on their possessions. Kelly Krei opened the scoring with two free throws for Select. Clare Duwelius struck from beyond the arc and Elite led 3-2. Ashley Arlen put Elite up 5-2, but Indy Uhlenhopp tied it up for Select with three. Elite had one more lead at 9-7 on a Morgan Hamner transition lay up. But the one-two punch of Krei (regular 3) and Uhlenhopp (& one) put Select up for good at 13-9. Elite's Kaitlin Armstrong scored on transition off a missed Select shot to close scoring 13-11 Select at the end of one.

Both teams were more effective on the offensive end in the second quarter. Select scored on their first four possessions. Ashton McClarren hand five points including a three to make it 21-12 Select. Another six point run put Select up 27-16 after a post up by Uhlenhopp. Elite took a time out at 3:31. From that point on Elite outscored Select 9-3 the rest of the quarter. Select led at half 30-25.

It was back to first quarter mode at the start of the third quarter. Elite started the 3rd with a 10 possession drought, half of which were turnovers. When they did miss they never got a second chance. But Select also had problems finding the bottom of the net early with their first four possessions misses. But they also got on the board first and it was Uhlenhopp picking off an Arlen pass and going the distance for the lay up & one. That started an 11-0 run to put Select up 41-25. Select added five more points to go up 46-27, a 16-2 run with 1:54 left in the quarter. Elite did close with a 9-4 run, but the damage had been done and the distance required to close the gap was far.

Elite did get as close as 13 early and 12 with 1:28 to go, but outcome was not in doubt. Select scored their last 8 points at the line in the last 4:26 of the game. Elite did try to narrow the margin and Armstrong had five points in a row, but even then it was 58-44. Select did have problems late with the pressure as Kelly Krei had two turnovers in 30 seconds, one on a charge, another on a pass, sandwiched around two missed free throws by Kaitlin Oney. Elite's Kalli Hansen scored in the paint for the last points of the day. Both teams concluded the game with two non scoring possessions.

The free throw line was very kind to Select they had 34% of their points from the charity stripe, the most of any of the games we saw on Sunday. In the end it was the defense that carried the margin. Their doubling up in the half court caused panic with passing decisions. The early third quarter brole Elite's back. Also Select was consistent throughout the contest. I know all teams had limited practice time, but they were able to execute much better than the other squads.
