Strange.
Crazy.
Insane.
but the best word to descirbe this game is Controversial.

WBL upset PCG in a key Suburban East contest. Earlier in the year WBL upset Cretin-Derham Hall.

WBL scored on their first two possessions to take a 4-0 lead as they worked the give and go game. After missing 4 free throws PCG did convert on five straight possessions and led 9-8. Katya Leick had four points in the PCG 9-4 run. It was then WBL's turn with four straight scoring possessions with a 7-2 run. Tanya Dickey had six in the run with two off cuts, and one basket off a steal and lay up. WBL pushed the lead to 21-14, as PCG hit a 6 possession dry spell. WBL led at half 26-20.

WBL expanded that lead with five of six scoring possessions on a 11-5 run. Stacey Dally had four for WBL in the run. WBL held a 37-27 lead with 13:44 to go, only to see PCG go on an 18-5 run to lead 45-42 with 2:05 to go. 3 players delivered for PCG in the run Leick had eight, Voigt, and Nohrenberg had five. This is where controversy #1 came in. At 5:10 to go Jessica Widerski was fouled for WBL and was allowed to shoot the one and one. But PCG didn't have the required seven fouls. Widerski made one. Once the mistake was found out, it was too late to correct it. PCG took their first lead in the second half on Nohrenberg's transition lay up and free throw for a 45-42 lead. There were two turnovers by each team. In fact WBL was mired in a six possession drought.

That is where controversy #2 came in WBL's Tanya Dickey drained a 3 from the right side to tie the game, but there also was a foul on Katya Leick underneath as she held on a block out. But Dickey went to the line and made one, missed the other. Dickey wasn't the one that was fouled. That made the score 46-45 WBL with 52.1 seconds left. On PCG's next possession Sami Hildebrandt drove the lane and missed her runner. Jessica Widerski grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She canned her first free throw, missed her second. WBL led 47-45. Jackie Voigt was fouled on a drive and she tied it for PCG with two free throws.

With 14.5 seconds to go Dickey was fouled deep 88 feet away. she missed her free throw, but Leick was whistled for a lane violation meaning Dickey got her one and one again. (Controversy #3) controversy 3 wasn't a lane violation on Katya Leick. She was telling her teammates to block out and the ref said she was disrupting the free thrower so he let Dickey shoot again. Dickey, with a second chance, made both for a 49-47 lead. Sarah Nohrenberg was fouled on her drive and she missed her first free throw with 7 seconds left. She did make her second to cut the margin to 49-48. Dickey was fouled again, but time was now 3.1 and Dickey was good again for two more for the final 51-48 margin. Nohrenberg's 3 with 3.1 seconds left didn't drop.

made fts: PCG 15, WBL 10
bench: WBL 6, PCG 0
I can understand if both coaches have a few more gray hairs after this one. WBL had players down the stretch that were taking shots from quite a distance when they had the lead. Probably not the best shot selection at the time. Also WBL was moving well early, but as the night wore on the passing and cutting game was taken away by PCG. WBL didn't have the same sharpness on their cuts and weren't quite as open.
PCG was struggling (37-27) when they finally started putting it together. Part of the struggle was at the line. In the first half PCG missed nine free throws as they only made three. They also missed five free throws in the second half, that combined is 14 points left at the line. Also when the game was 46-45 WBL, PCG didn't have their hot shooters/scorers take the shot.
But Dickey made the big 3 with uner a minute to go down three to tie. She also delivered at the line when it mattered (even with a second chance).
