WAYZATA trojans 63, COOPER hawks 52

Wayzata won a 5AAAA battle on Monday night. It was a bit of a revenge match from last year's section quarterfinals won by Cooper in overtime. But tonight Wayzata took the lead and never let go in the contest between former conference rivals.

Wayzata jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after four possessions with Katie Coughenour hitting an opening 3 and later getting a steal and lay up. Cooper cut that margin to 11-9 with an 8-4 run. Four different players connected on the run. Cooper stayed close to 17-15, then went into a seven possession drought. Wayzata kept their steam rolling with a 9-0 run. Kate Thompson had four points in this stretch. Wayzata maintained that 11 point margin to 30-19. Cooper scored on their last three possessions with Capriece Ogris scoring five of the seven points. Wayzata led 33-26. Kate Thompson had 12 points at half for Wayzata.

Much of the second half was an elastic game with Wayzata leading between 13-7 in the second half. There were no major runs, but Cooper did have a five possession drought and did not score the last 3:30 of the game. Wayzata pushed their lead to 42-29 after Teresa Thour put back a missed shot with 14:45 to go. Cooper scored on their next three possessions with Krista Gary draining back to back 3s to close the gap back to 44-37. Thour then scored on an out of bounds play to push the lead back to 46-37. Cooper's last gasp came whe Ogris hit a three with 3:30 to go to make it 59-52. But the Hawks missed fired on their next four possessions and Wayzata milked the clock and scored their points at the line to finish the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
Wayzata 63, 66, 95.5, .455
Cooper 52, 65, 80.0, .369
made 3s: Wayzata 3, Cooper 3
made fts: Wayzata 10, Cooper 5
bench: Wayzata 14, Cooper 14
Wayzata moved the ball around the perimeter much more crisply and effectively than Cooper. They played with more speed and urgency. Their passes were sharp. Wayzata's press also caused problems for Cooper. The Hawks had poor spacing, dribbled toward the sidelines, and drifted away from the ball inviting longer passes and easier steals if the defense watched the eyes, hands and feet of the passer. Also Wayzata was more physical. Wayzata is 11-6 overall and 4-0 in 5AAAA; Cooper's record is 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the section.
