CRETIN-DERHAM HALL raiders 49,
WOODBURY royals 47

Two defensive minded teams, two 3AAAA and Suburban East powers, two AAAA ranked teams (#7 and #8), the conference lead at stake. All these ingredients had the makings of a game that would go down to the wire. Add in the whole youth basketball organization of Woodbury and there was a crowd and atmosphere.

CDH took the early lead with scores on their first two possessions. Molly Geske scored on a put back and Alyssa Karel hit a pull up jumper. As was the case most of the night between these two evenly matched teams, Woodbury answered with three consecutive scores of their own with two straight 3s (by Jessica Thone, and then by Lindsey Sajevic) for an 8-4 lead. At the 10 minute mark it was 13-5 as Woodbury scored on two out of bounds plays. CDH then scored 12 unanswered points. Woodbury was mired in a 1/13 offensive sequence with seven possession drought that lasted five minutes. Both teams had a flurry of activity with both teams scoring on five of the last six possessions. Woodbury's Sarah Hintz tied the game at 19 on a drive from the right side into the lane.

CDH scored on two consecutive possessions close to the 13 minute mark to break a 24 tie. Karel scored on both possessions, both drives, to take a 28-24 lead. This started an elastic game where CDH would pull out to a four/five point lead, and Woodbury would close the margin. Five times CDH would pull out, five times Woodbury would close the gap. The fourth time CDH led 42-37, Woodbury's Hintz scored a lay up off the CDH press, Then Karel found Kendra Harris sealed underneath to make it 44-39. Carrie Wardell made one free throw, and then after a missed shot, Thone hit her second 3 shot of the night to close it to 44-43. CDH added three more points on a put back by Carolyn Dienhart and on the next possession one free throw by Sarah Hendricks. She missed the second, but Geske was there for the rebound, but the possession ended on a turnover and CDH was up 47-43 with 1:30 to go. Both teams had turnovers on passes that were too far away. Woodbury's Kassey Kallman snatched a stray Geske pass up top and went down for the lay up to make it 47-45 with 1:05 left. Karel was fouled and and went to the line, but she was deep on both and Wardell was there for the rebound. Thone took a three, with 37.2 seconds left, but in missed and Hendricks had the key rebound. This time it was Dienhart to go to the line for a one and one, but she also missed. Kylie Kallman picked up the rebound and Woodbury took a time out with 32.5 seconds left. They worked the left side and found Hintz posted on the left side. She converted to tie it at 47. CDH came down in what I call "victory" formation which is four players flat across the baseline and the point guard, Karel in this situation, going one on one against Kylie Kallman. Karel penetrated, missed the initial shot, but she got the rebound and converted with 6,.9 seconds left. Woodbury had one last chance, and they got it to Hintz again, but her shot had to much adreneline in it and it bounced off. Hendricks was there for the rebound to finish out the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
Cretin-Derham Hall 49, 62, 79.0, .387
Woodbury 47, 62, 75.8, .371
made 3s: Woodbury 3, CDH 1
made fts: Woodbury 9, CDH 2
bench: CDH 10, Woodbury 5
Both squads used man defense most of the night. CDH did use full court press in the second half Both teams had turnovers due to passing to targets too far away. So is it the passers or the receivers that fade away that should get tagged for the turnovers? Woodbury tried to get the ball inside with more regularity and that is why they went ot the line more often.
One factor that needs to improve for both teams is at the free throw line. CDH needs to improve on the quantity of free throw attempts. CDH left 8 points at the line. Woodbury left 11. So it was .200 for CDH and .529 for Woodbury. Both need to get north of .700.
