ST. CLOUD TECH tigers 56, MOORHEAD spuds 54

In a key 8AAAA battle for the top seed in the section, St. Cloud Tech edged Moorhead on Terin Euerle's basket on an out of bounds play with 5.8 seconds left in the contest.

Moorhead led early as they established their inside presence with Kassie Hooten. She had four of the first 7 Moorhead points as they led 7-2. SCT went on a 8-0 run to take the lead 10-7. Jordyn Sears had the first five points in the run. SCT was more effective with their possessions, as Moorhead was only able to squeeze one point off as they left 7 points at the line. SCT also took advantage of second chance points as they controlled the offensive boards. SCT had 8 points in the first half on second chancers. The lead hung around six points for most of the rest of the half. Moorhead was able to whittle it down to 21-17 after two free throws by Kelsey Jacobson. SCT pushed it back up to 26-17 for their largest lead in the first half. Hooten ended the scoring with a feed from Jenna Dolence to make it 26-19 at half. Hooten had 7 at half, Sears had 8.

Moorhead came out smoking in the second half scoring 8 of the first 9 times they had possession of the ball. Jacobson nailed a 3 and the run was on. When it was over Moorhead outscored SCT 17-5. Part of the change was a 1/3/1 zone employed by Moorhead. Moorhead grabbed the lead at 15:56 on two free throws by Tricia Vanyo. When the run was over they were up 36-31. Moorhead then went into a five possession drought. SCT figured out the weak spot in the 1/3/1 and started to roll again. They scored 7 of 8 possessions. They took a 46-43 lead on Sears' 3 from the right corner with 7:15 to go. Their full run was 19-7, and they led 50-43 with about four minutes to go. Then it was Moorhead's turn for a run and they converted on five of six possessions. Hooten was doing serious damage in the paint as she had 8 of the 11 points in the 11-4 run. Moorhead never had the lead at this point, but tied it at 52 and 54. Sears missed on a drive with less than 1:30 to go. Moorhead's Vanyo got the rebound. The Spuds worked it around and Vanyo was fouled. She missed both free throws, but Hooten was there for the rebound. She missed and the ball went out of bounds to SCT with 32 seconds left. SCT worked it down and took two time outs at 21 seconds. Sears drove again, but the ball was deflected out of bounds with 8.3 seconds left. On the ensuing out of bounds play Terin Euerle broke hard for the basket from the free throw line and beat her defender. She scored the final points. Moorhead took a time out with 5.8 seconds left. Jacobson was fouled right away, but they were not in the bonus at that point. Moorhead took another time out with 3.1 ticks left. The ball went to Dolence who had a decent look at the 3, but it missed.

Jenna Dolence 4, 5, 80.0, .400 RF: no block out on the weak side, too tight and was beat by Euerle on the game winner.
Gina Jaroszewski 9, 10, 90.0, .500 the "4" scored in the paint. RF: needs to be more physical. doesn't seal well on offense. too tight to the weak side on defense.
Kassie Hooten 21, 20, 105.0, .550 offensive minded. hooks defenders to free herself for shot. RF: took a shot in the first half just inside the 3 line. only 3 defensive wraps? and they were all in the first half. She needs to put the same energy into getting defensive rebounds.

bench: St. Cloud Tech 13, Moorhead 3
Both teams were better in the second half. SCT's pp100s went from 78.9 to 107.1; while Moorhead's jumped from 59.4 to 120.7. Moorhead allowed 11 more second chance points including the last four in the second half. A total of 19 points because of failures to block out or not being aggressive on loose ball situations. SCT's man defense limited Moorhead and forced them to do things they may not have wanted. Moorhead did however get it inside to Hooten quite often. But the rest of the time they were working by themselves it seemed. Their offense more of a penetrate and dish.
