BECKER bulldogs 44, ROGERS panthers 41
In a battle of AAA, and Mississippi 8 heavyweights #2 Becker threw the last punch in a 44-41 grind it out game at #5 Rogers. It was Becker's height and strength vs Rogers' speed and perimeter game. Height/strength prevailed this night. Becker doesn't have a loss in the M8, while Rogers now has two losses. Cambridge also had no losses in conference play going into the night. Gopher Coach Pam Borton was in the house watching 2008 recruits Brianna and Nicole Mastey from Becker.
With both teams extremely familiar with each other the offenses had a hard time generating anything. Becker scored on their opening possession with Brianna Mastey scoring, but there was no scoring for either teams until 13:22 to go in the half. Becker broke free for a 14-10 lead on Alex Crasper's second three, this time from the left wing. Rogers had a five possession scoring run with a 10-4 run and taking a 22-18 lead with 1:01 to go. Becker closed out the half with four straight points, capped by Shelly Stemper's put back and free throw. It was 22 all at the break.
Becker claimed the first lead in the second half after a Stemper baseline drive. Rogers answered right away with a Stephanie Williams 3 from the left corner. Rogers built on that lead expanding it to 41-35 with five straight points by Williams on a 3, again from the left corner, and a 15 footer. Becker rallied from that six point deficit. Rogers didn't score for 5:30 on their last six possession. Four of those possessions ended up in turnovers. Brianna Mastey hit a basket to cut the margin to four. Later Rachel Gilbert scored on a baseline drive, and was fouled, but she didn't convert the free throw. With 2:14 to go Rogers' Casey Mann missed two free throws. Jessie Althoff grabbed the rebound for Becker. Althoff grabbed an offensive rebound and delivered the put back to tie the game at 41. On Rogers' next possession Brianna Mastey drew the offensive foul on a Mann charge with 1:37 to go. Both teams had non scoring possessions. Williams missed a 3 from the left side and Chelsea Lieser grabbed the rebound for Becker with 59.9 seconds to go. They maintained possession the rest of the way. Becker worked the clock down to 18.4 seconds left before taking their final time out. Althoff was fouled on a post up and made the first free throw with 4.2 seconds to go. She missed the second, but Brianna Mastey was their for the rebound and put back to give the final margin 44-41 for Becker.

Both teams are extremely familiar with each other and their zones never gave free looks for the other. Transition games were held to a minimum. The .328 floor % was the 83rd best I have charted this year out of 124 teams.
This game had playoff intensity. Becker was resiliant and didn't panic when down. They kept in system and pulled off the win. Brianna Mastey seemed to be involved everywhere at both ends. Her stamp was on the game. Becker also had 3 old fashioned 3s showing their overall strength.
Rogers didn't value the ball or make strong choices at the end of the contest. Things seemed forced. Also Becker had 14 second chance points compared to 8 for Rogers.
