This game took place on July 30 in the tropical gyms of Bloomington Kennedy
North Tartan Meltdown
14 Championship game

MN Fury 65, Minneapolis Lady Cats 47

Two unlikely teams made the finals of this tournament. The Fury were put together at the last minute to enter the event, while the MLC were playing up two age levels. A word of warning, since this game took place on court 1, and what I thought was going to be the Red (17-15) Championship was going to be on court 3, I left before the end of this game.

Both teams converted on their first possessions, Fury with a three from Nicole Dooher, MLC with Sarina Baker inside. MLC led 8-5 early, but the Fury had some 3 balls in their arsenal and used them to retake the lead at 10-8 on Tiffany Van Haaften's shot. At that point MLC went into a 9 possession drought and the Fury built their lead to 19-10. MLC did hit one free throw before the end of the quarter to make it 19-11. Dooher had quite a quarter with 11 points including two 3s.

It was more of the same to start the second quarter. The Fury had eight unanswered points before MLC lit up the scoreboard. They endured another 7 possession drought, but by that time it was 27-11. The Fury led at half 32-20.

After both teams traded baskets, the Fury went on a 12-0 run to make it 48-23. Lisa Springer sprung for two 3s in the outburst and had 8 during the sequence. It was another 9 possession dry spell for the MLC youngsters. At the end of the 3rd it was the Fury 53-29.

The Fury built their lead up to 63-32. Then the pressure by MLC started to pay off. They scored 3 times before I left, but they outscored the Fury 15-2 to close out the game.

Mpls Lady Cats 38, 67, 56.7, .284

Both teams played extremely hard. Both teams still need some seasoning, but their trajectory looks good. Both teams obviously need to get stronger, and value the ball more. For a team that was put together just in a few days, they looked as if they knew each other all summer. For the MLC 12s they got to the finals by their speed, quickness, and aggressive play.

Next up: the exhibition between North Tartan and Mpls Lady Lakers.
