this game took place on Saturday, August 5
St. Benedict's College, St. Joseph, MN
Sweet 16 first round

Minneapolis Roosevelt 41, Kingsland 40

This game did not get off to a roaring start. Kingsland started off 0/10 in their possessions. Roosevelt was 2/10, but only had two points to show for it as both possessions were 1/2 free throws. Kingsland did get something going with 3 straigh scoring possessions. Roosevelt had a five possession drought that helped Kingsland. At the quarter it was Kingsland 7-4.

In the second quarter Roosevelt tied it up at 7. As soon as they did, Kingsland went on a 9-0 run at 16-7. Kala Jensen had 8 points this quarter. Roosevelt had another five drought in this frame. Kingsland was up at half 22-11.

It seemed like a repeat of the first quarter to start the third. Kingsland endured a 10 possession drought extending over two quarters. Roosevelt wasn't much better going 0/8. But Roosevelt connected first in the second half, and they kept on connecting four times. They had a 7-2 run with Porsha Zimmerman scoring four points in the run. She had 8 for the quarter. Kingsland had another 7 possession drought in the third quarter. In fact only Kala Jensen could find the bottom of the net as she had all four of Kingsland's points that quarter. Charmel Marshall tied it at 24, but Jensen hit a shot at the horn for a 26-24 Kingsland lead.

Another poor start was in store for the fourth quarter. Kingsland was 1/8, and Roosevelt 0/5 to begin the final frame. Roosevelt took its first second half lead at 30-29 on Zimmerman's driving lay up. Marshall scored a transition lay up on the next Roosevelt possession, and then nailed a 3 on the next. Roosevelt led 35-31 at this point. At 39-36 Emily Greiner drove in for a lay up to cut it to 39-38 Roosevelt with 1:35 to go. Zimmerman missed the front end of a one and one situation with 43.8 seconds to go. Newsom-Duvall got the rebound, and Marshall too missed the front end of a one and one with 35 seconds left. Tallie Volkert for Kingsland got the rebound this time. Kingsland worked the time down and took a time out. After the time out Greiner found Jensen on a back screen and Jensen scored with 8.5 seconds to go 40-39 Kingsland. Marshall got the ball and penetrated the lane. She was fouled and made both free throws with 2.5 seconds left. A desperation 3 by Greiner bounced off the rim.

BY THE NUMBERS
Minneapolis Roosevelt 41, 64, 64.1, .344
Kingsland 40, 66, 60.6, .288

Again the numbers were abysmal. Part of that may be that both teams were missing important players: Paisly Larson for Kingsland, and Kiara Strickland for Roosevelt. Kingsland had just come off a Minnesota Team camp B Championship. Their offense was definitely off. Neither team was sharp and clean in their execution. I am not going to credit the defense in either case. They both played their zones, but no one had the sharpshooters to bust it open.

One interesting fact is that Kingsland had 10 points in from the line in the first half, zero in the second half. They did have two front ends that did not drop. Roosevelt made 6 for the entire game.

However this game had drama. This game kept fans guessing right to the end. So in one sense this game was entertaining, but not satisfying to purists.

Next up: general news of the day tomorrow morning, with two out and abouts again: Cedar Mountain-Comfrey vs Winona Cotter in the quarterfinals and St. Paul Central vs Crookston in the 9th place finals.
