your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

this game took place on Sunday, August 6
St. Benedict's College, St. Joseph, MN
MN Sweet 16 Semifinals
Champlin Park 70, Becker 59

CP started of the scoring in this game with two free throws by Jenny Thiesen. CP held a 7-6 lead when Becker went on a five possession scoring spree headed by Rey Robinson's 3 at the beginning and two free throws to close it off. At this point it was 17-7. Becker scored three times in this stretch on transition lay ups. When Robinson was fouled on possession #13 the ref came up and asked what was the score. The table had it wrong. I told him Becker 17-7, but they never used my advice. So it was 15-9 on the board. Luckily that mistake was not a big factor in the outcome. Becker led at the quarter 19-11. I will use my scoring in the rest of the story.

At the start of the second quarter everyone was hitting. Both teams combined were 9/10 on their possessions. Becker led 27-21 when the dust settled. Natalie Gigler had a hot hand for CP with five straight points over three possessions. Becker had a 7 possession drought after the cornucopia of points. Six of those possessions ended on missed shots. CP had 8 unanswered points in that slumber. By half it was Becker 33-32.

Becker scored twice early in the 3rd quarter to go up 36-32. Becker led 37-34 when CP scored six unanswered points over six possessions. Becker again stumbled into a five possession drought. The game was tied at 40 and 44, but Heather Sampson knocked in a shot to put CP up 46-44 headed into the final frame.

Becker tied the game at 48 on Rey Robinson's three. CP then went on an 11-4 run with the help of three 3s: A Theisen 3 sandwiched between two by Fuller. It was 59-52 after the aerial show. Becker did close it down to 64-59 on Briana Mastey's three but CP canned their six free throws down the stretch for the final margin.

BY THE NUMBERS
Champlin Park 70, 68, 102.9, .500
Becker 59, 69, 85.5, .406

Both teams were aggressive taking the ball to the basket. CP did make 21 free throws to Becker's 18. CP had one more 3 than Becker.

CP had a senior dominated team that has been in the wars for awhile. This was the youngsters from Becker first forays into the power games. They had a big big win over St. Paul Central in the opening round. They rode that momentum with a win over Class A champion Fulda in the Quarters. But Becker only made two two point field goals in the entire second half and both of those were in the 3rd quarter. The future looks extremely bright for these young veterans.

BONUS
Cedar Mountain-Comfrey 47, Hopkins 43

In the upset special of the day class A CMC came from behind to beat perennial state tournament favorite Hopkins.

I was only there for the last 18 possessions (9 for each team). Hopkins was up 37-35 at the time. On the first possession I was there Jackie Hiebert connected for Hopkins to make it 39-35. Hiebert would score all six points for Hopkins in this time. Brittany Kokesch came down and hit a 3 for CMC to make it a 39-38 game. Stephanie Ochs gave CMC the lead on a drive. Hiebert responded for Hopkins last lead at 41-40. After two nothing possessions, CMC rattled off four straight scores all by different players to make the final score 47-43. #21 scored on a drive, then Nikki Schultz, Shana Grejtak, and Stephanie Ochs all hit one and ones for the final margin.

Here are the Hopkins scoring totals:
Jackie Hiebert 14
Caitlin Rowland 10
Rachel Johnson 7
Hanna Muegge 5
Hanna Oliverus 4
Ana Garcia 3
Tess Komarek 0
Jenna Lillemoe 0
