THE WEEK THAT WAS SUMMER 2008 #2: Park Center & High Fives

Today I will review the past week, but I will also look at the past D1 collegiate season with the high fives.

First off: last weekend the tournament action was right down the road for me at Park Center. The 16s were in action with an 8 team bracket while the 17s did a four team pool. Also there was the South Central All Star game at Concordia St. Paul.
If I had to describe the action this week it was ----anemic. Offenses had a hard time finding the bottom of the net. If a team was in the 70s I was afraid they might get a nose bleed for zipping along too fast. Here is a comparison of the pp100s for selected periods:
Period, pp100, floor %
Spring/Summer 2007 79.78, .384
Iowa AAU Week 1 2008 89.33, .402
Park Center Week 2 2008 62.42, .309
That is a 26.91 drop in pp100 for the week. Part of that can be explained by the fact the week before featured many more varsity experienced players. This weekend had a smattering (at least at Park Center). But even at Concordia St. Paul numbers were not great. One reason for that is the very nature of all star games. Teams don't have the luxury of practicing two to three hours for two to three weeks prior to their first game. You find aggressive players trying to do everything on their own since they either don't trust their teammates, or don't know what they can do. This invariably leads to poor offensive output.

As for the 16s there is some ability and potential there. What needs to happen is the players need to become more aware of what is happening. They need to seize the initiative. I feel if a player is destined for bigger things that player should be able to make me turn my head and jot down notes with their energy, hustle, enthusiasm, drive, sparkle and above all execution. If not, and I am not kidding here, all the players eventually blur together and they become JAGs--Just Another Girl.

Turning our attention to the College scene--during the season I was keeping track of the High Five. What would the scores be like if the highest five scorers for each state played against each other? This list does not mean these players are the BEST. It means they are the highest SCORERS. This again does not measure the pp100 or any other action. Don't look at the list and say "well player A would never score 19 points in the (you fill in the blank here) Conference." You are probably right. All I cared about was the top 5 D1 scorers for each state. I suppose I could qualify it by saying the top 5 D1 players from a BCS school, but there is the one D1 championship, so...here we go. And the winner is.....

WISCONSIN--88.3

THE WEEKLY AWARDS
TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Minnesota Dynamite's offense exploded (in a good way) this weekend. They were the only team to crack 100 pp100 for the week as they went on to win the Park Center MYAS tournament. They never were really challenged as they won the semifinal game over MN Heat Red by 27 and the championship game over Triple Threat by 22. They took good shots, and were stingy at the other end of the floor.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Haylie Darrington made the most of her all star opportunity with a pair of 3s in the first half. She had a game high 13 points. Besides the shots from behind the arc Darrington went to the glass too. She also had 2 assists, which may not sound like a bunch, but in the all star game that was the highest on Maroon. Darrington simply was consistent in a game full of inconsistencies.

The rules to make the below team:
1. I have to see the player during the week
2. Player needs a minimum of 6 possessions (summer level)
3. Player still needs to be above 100 pp100
4. player still needs to be above .500 floor %
6. If I see a player twice (or more) the averages have to hold.

FIRST TEAM
Haylie Darrington, All Star Maroon (Blue Earth)
Taquoia Hammick, All Star Gold (Mpls South)
Kara Hofschild, Minnesota Dynamite (Andover)
Megan Strese, X-Factor 2 (Brandon-Evansville)
Amy Waterman, Triple Threat (Anoka)
HONORABLE MENTION
Sara Drangstveit, Minnesota Dynamite (Andover)

DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Kiara Strickland of the Gold All Stars (and Mpls Roosevelt) celebrated her recent decision to head to UI Chicago with a strong defensive performance in the all star contest. She led the week with 11 steals and was always looking for a chance to snatch the ball. Big, strong, quick, she has a forceful, game changing attitude on the D end.

DEFENSIVE TEAM
Taylor Bare, Triple Threat (Anoka)
Bethany Doolittle, Hill-Murray
Julia Dysthe, MN Stars Black (White Bear Lake)
Julianne Mitchell, Maroon (Mpls Edison)
Kiara Strickland, Gold (Mpls Roosevelt)

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Kara Hofschild caught my attention with her two performances for MN Dynamite. She is one of the point guards and delivered on both ends involving her teammates with assists besides stroking shots when the opportunity presented itself.

To be eligible for this honor it has to be the first time I chart this player. Hofschild can not be newcomer again.
