SOUTH CENTRAL ALL STAR
at Concordia St. Paul
MAROON 45, GOLD 39

There were at least five all star games this week and this was the second year of the South Central series. This is not your typical all star game. First off there was 20 minute running time no matter what the margin. Second this all star game had a sound track continually playing. Of course it was the standard hits of the day. And in a continuing trend this week (and not a good trend) the pp100 didn't crack 70. This is due in part to the lack of practice time with unfamiliar players. I saw plenty of 1 vs 5 action. Most of the scores came in transition, not in half court. Droughts were frequent.

The first half was thin in the scoring department. If you look at the first 34 possessions combined the pp100 (again combined was below freezing at 29.4 pp100 and a floor % of .147. Gold had droughts of 7 and then an unlucky 13. Maroon also had 7. Maroon's Haylie Darrington knocked down two 3s to put the Maroons up 13-6. By that time Darrington had 10 points. Kiara Strickland answered with a three right after Darrington's three. That started a 10-2 run capped off with Brittney Lodermeier's put back to make it 16-15 at the break.

The second half didn't have the dry spells that plagued the first half. The game flipped back and forth. Gold stretched out with a 21-17 lead. Two minutes later it was Maroon up 26-22 after a 9-1 run. Courtney Kelzer had four points in the run. A Maroon six possession drought opened the door for Gold. The Golds started a 13-5 run. Hannah Wenaas had five points for gold. Then Gold fell into an 8 possession drought. Maroon seized that opportunity with 14 unanswered points. Mitchell hit two consecutive 3s in the run. Kelzer put Maroon up for good after a put back. Maroon was in command 45-35 with a minute left. Gold finished up with two Taquoia Hammick baskets inside to make the final 45-39.
