Out & About: South of the River/Rochester Shock 16s

#2 posting 5.14.2006

This game took place on 5.13.2006 at the Minneapolis Midtown Y
16u Division
South of the River 40, Rochester Shock 37

SotR's Brittany Chambers got the game off with a bang with her 3 pointer. SotR pushed the lead to 5-0 on Colleen Doerr's basket. They held the lead until Danielle Frank tied it at 14 for Rochester. Savanna Sawle gave Roch their first lead with a basket and free throw 17-14. At this time SotR was on an 8 possession scoring drought with plenty of missed opportunities. Doerr's rebound basket stopped the dry spell. That was the start of an 8-4 run. Jo Morando returned the lead to SotR and they ended the half up 24-21.

Rochester took the lead with Sawle's basket at 28-26 as they finished a 7-2 run. SotR answered with their own 7-0 run to retake the lead at 33-28. But like a Jeckyll and Hyde they reverted back to hiding from the basket as they went on a 6 possession drought. During that stretch Roch scored six points to take the lead 34-33 on Alise Holst's two free throws. Catherine Nass missed on a 3, but Jensen also missed on Rochester's next possession. Nass, going back to the block where she has better success, scored off a pass from Doerr and the next time SotR had the ball Chambers drilled her second three to pad the lead at 38-35. Frank cashed in one free throw and Chambers added two free throws for SotR for their final points. Splittstoesser finished the scoring for Roch before the time ran out.

Once upon a time I coached Katie Doerr in AAU back in 1997. Our team won the State for the age level that year and she eventually attended MSU Moorhead to play collegiately and had a good career there. Her youngest sister Colleen was playing for SotR. It was the first time we had seen each other in a couple year. Back '97 I had read a poem before the start of practice, and Katie asked for a copy which I gave her. It is now up on the wall of her workplace. It was good to catch up again with all the goings on.

BY THE NUMBERS
South of the River 40, 49, 81.6, .388
Rochester Shock 37, 48, 77.1, .375
The difference was the 3ball by SotR. They cashed in five times. Neither team went to the line that much---a sign of lack of aggressive action to the basket.
