MN AAU 16u Qualifier
Metro Stars Black 59, MN Stars Jen 47
Again this is a game from Sunday May 7. The name MN Stars Jen indicates Jen is coaching the team. This is their 3rd team. Also coach Cosgriff left the team in the hands of his HS assistant Sension. Cosgriff was watching his youngster in a gymnastic event.
This game took place late in the day and you could see the energy was just not the same as it was earlier in the day. One hour off before the next game and only five minutes to warm up keeps games moving, but does not make for great basketball. It was easier to count the missed streaks rather than the made streaks. For example early on MSJ had a drought of 7. MSB only trailed once during the game at 5-4. MSB did put together a string of four and run of 9-2 at the midpoint of the first half. Theisen provided five of the points. The biggest memorable event was a double technical called on coach Sension late in the first half. Kellie Schuneman dropped in all four free throws for MSJ to cut the lead to 23-18. On the ensuing throw in Laura Kalbfell intercepted and scored a layup to give the cushion back to MSB. I had the feeling of deja vu (Kalbfell did the same exact anticipation, steal and layup in the MSW game. At half it was 27-18.
The next coach for the MSB was April Calhoun, recent Gopher graduate. She did not have any issues with the refs the rest of the way. MSJ closed the lead to 35-32 on a Robinson drive. MSB went on an 11-0 run including a four straight possession scoring string. Gigler scored the first four on the run, and Benson the next four. The 46-32 lead was to be the high water mark. Then MSB went on a 9 possession siesta. MSJ was only able to score three times during the stretch, not enough to put the game in doubt, but close enough to make it interesting. With the score 46-38 Gigler scored the first four points for MSB. Schunemann was answering the call for MSJ with four points as well. The closest MSJ came was 51-44. MSB finished the game with an 8-3 run.

BY THE NUMBERS
MSB 59, 67, 88.1, .433
MSJ 47, 66, 71.2, .318
The only consistent is defense. Teams on Sunday showed pressure and energy, but they did not show---as a team---precision and execution on offense. MSB had two defensive gems with .318 and .250 floor %.
I know I said I would get both of the games remaining up today, but I was delayed. I attended a 12u practice tonight to see the next generation. The Triple Threat/Southern MN Magic game will come up on Thurdsay. After that we will take a close look at who performed and the differences between AAU & HS. Why the numbers are a bit different
Next Up: tomorrow afternoon
