Out & About: Metro Stars Black/Metro Stars White 16u

#2 posting 5.9.2006

MN AAU Qualifier 16u
Metro Stars Black 59, Metro Stars White 35

This is a civil civil war game with Black the #1 Metro Stars team and White #2. It also is a civil war of sorts with Hopkins coach Brian Cosgriff coaching the Black while his players Hiebert and Muegge play with the White.

Black got the scoring going with the free throw line for their first five points. Barber for MSW was the first to get a basket, but White started off with six straight non scoring possessions. That was mild compared to the mammoth 16 possession dry spell. They couldn't even score on the technical on the Black bench. They missed both free throws, and then passed the ball into the wrong team. Kalbfell had great anticipation and scored the lay up. Black suffered a 5 possession drought, but they strung four straight scores late in the half with Rittenhouse and Boylan scoring four and five. Black outscored their sisters 16-2. Barber again ended the drought, but the damage was done and Black went to the sidelines with a 29-9 lead. Looking at the free throw line Black outscored White 13-3.

White still had problems scoring in the second half as they started off 0/5. Four of the possessions were turnovers. Going back into the first half they were 1/23. Brrrrr. With the score in a comfortable place not much happened to pull the game one way or another. The free throws were limited in the second half--MSB only made five in the second half. MSW made four 3s in the second half as their options to come back were pretty limited. Scoring demons in the second half for Black included Lyons for 8 and Boylan with 7. Black took the game 59-35.

MSB has to be happy with their defensive effort. The 1/23 stretch needs to be chalked up to the pressure they applied.
As the case was all afternoon not one team looked smooth on offense. That may be because of lack of practice time and melding together players from a wide and varied backgrounds and systems. It will be interesting to see if in two weeks if any team can crack the 100 pp100 barrier.

Next up: North Tartan and the Lakers about 10 pm
