Out & About: MN Total Package/MN Stars Schmitz 15s

#2 posting 5.23.2006

This game took place Sunday, May 21 at Forest Lake
MN AAU 15 Semifinals
MN Total Package 44, MN Stars Schmitz 37

In a low scoring affair TP beat SS 44-37. TP was first on the board with Theairra Taylor, the jumping jack, scoring on a put back. Jessica Thone fired back with a trey from the left side. Neither team had any traction and both see sawed early. Both teams had problems scoring with SS enduring droughts of 5 twice, while TP had one 5 dry spell. SS did snap out of their offensive slumber with a scoring string of four in a row as they went on a 7-0 run. Brianna Mastey was asserting herself in the paint and she had five points in a row at this time. TP scrambled back to tie the game at 21 on a 8-4 run capped off by Carolyn Mobley's three from the top of the circle. At half it was tied 21 all with Brianna Mastey leading SS with 9, and Taylor pacing TP with 8.

TP came roaring out of halftime with four straight scoring possessions and a 9-0 run to grab a 30-21 lead. SS took their time out after the third possession, but the harrassing Nicole Anderson swiped the ball and scored the lay up to finish the run. The run began with a Mobley 3, and the next three possession scores were the result of turnovers and lay ups. TP maintained the lead for the rest of the game. SS started the half with an 0/6 run. Taylor made a great move to put TP up 35-23 the biggest lead of the day. This time TP had a dry patch with an 0/5 drought. SS matched that a bit later. The closest SS got was 42-35 with 2:07 left.

The pressure TP put on SS gained them points in transition. The fact is offensive skills (ball handling, passing, shot selection) are not as strong as they can be. It is true players are going against better players (stronger, bigger, quicker), but the decisions on offense and execution has not risen to the occassion. This is true for all AAU. I am still waiting for the pp100 to get past 100, and for a team to crack .500 on the floor %. Individual players can and are the best of the best. Any time they are above 100 pp100 they have my attention. Any time they are above .500 on floor %, they have my attention. Of course I am not that wowed by a kid with three possessions, they better get these numbers with more than six, maybe closer to eight possessions.
