Out & About: Rosemount/Eastview

Rosemount 52, Eastview 43
Tonight was a clash between the neighborhood rivals in District 196--Rosemount and Eastview. They both started a 6-2 center, they both averaged 5-10 in their starting line ups.
First half
Eastview looked as if they were going to run away with this game early. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead and scored on 4/5 of their first possessions. They were working the paint ball game as Cassie Johnson scored six. In fact Johnson scored 10 of the first 12 points. Rosemount did not score until their seventh possessions. Rosemount defensively opened in man and Eastview executed their offense sharply. Eastview started with a 1/2/2 and frustrated Rosemount. Eastview expanded their lead to 18-6 when the game changed. Maggie Bauernfeind of Rosemount dropped a 3. But Eastview now grew cold. They went 12 possessions with nothing to show for it. Only two of those possessions were on turnovers, the rest were missed shots, more than likely 3s. Rosemount had shifted into a 2/3. Eastview, at this point, could not throw a beach ball in the ocean, and generated nothing in the paint. Rosemount wasn't necessarily ripping it up on offense, but chipped away. Leading the charge was Maggie Bauernfeind who scored 13 points during the run including a 3 when Rosemount took the lead for good at 21-20. They outscored Eastview 21-4 to end the half. Rosemount took advantage of Eastview turnovers for six points late in the half.
Second Half
Both teams came out of the gate cold in the second half. But then Amber Connor took a rebound, drove the length of the court and scored on a twisting drive. That started an avalanche of points for Rosemount as they scored on seven straight possessions. Rosemount had a 15-4 run to start the half. Together with the end of the first half Rosemount had a commanding 36-8 turnaround.
Eastview had to turn to man and Rosemount ran their offense for paintball. All of those possessions ended up in the paint and scores. Rosemount continued their push up to 50-32. Then the game went into another phase. A bewildering phase. Eastview started it's comeback in a halting manner. They used waves of five players after five players in the hopes of wearing down Rosemount. Or maybe it was looking for a spark of some sort from the sputtering outside shooting. Rosemount, on the other hand, changed their point guard responsibilities. They were clicking and humming with Bauernfeind, but with the full court man press of Eastview, she was taken out of the equation either by design or by the defense. Instead Connor was bringing up the ball with the defense provided by Cassie Johnson. The pressure worked as Rosemount got off their game and had 13 straight possessions without scoring. During this self imposed drought they started out with 5/7 possessions with turnovers. Eastview made use of these turnovers for 1 point in transition, 2 points total. Again Rosemount went into the generous mode with four straight possessions of turnovers. This time Eastview converted for six points. Eastview cut the score to 50-43 when they stole the ball. This time the turnover resulted in a missed lay up. At that point there was a minute to go and Megan Eul scored to give more cushion for Rosemount. Eastview did not put Rosemount at the line or even get them in the bonus as time ticked away and Rosemount walked off with a road win.

Rosemount Player Evaluations
Amber Conner (8) solid, strong, decent body control on drives, can zip ball down court. RF: can handle the ball, but is in no way a point guard. Need to make better decisions late in the game.
Megan Eul (16) scored her points in the paint, kind of a stealthy, under the radar player RF: Needs upper body strength. Will not play inside post HS
Michelle Hugelen (2) Strength is defense with shot blocking and patrolling the middle of the 2/3. RF: offense? what offense. She needs to seal better, work on her hands, and moves with people leaning on her. Had some assists to Eul.
Maggie Bauernfeind (20) had a game high, season high performance. Can dribble with her head up and change directions without the dreaded spin dribble. I liked the behind the back and between legs moves. Her back move is her go to move. Had a nice stroke from outside. Can drive and score. Decent speed. RF: Was taken off point guard duty. Maybe that was by design. However when her teammates were in trouble she needed to become available and not become a spectator. She also needs to gain upper body strength.
Gabrielle Petrich (4) another guard, RF: upper body strength, decision making
Eastview Player Evaluations
Cassie Johnson (13) dominated early at both ends of the floor. Good shot blocker. rangy, can guard on the perimeter--not guards, but bigger kids. RF: Need to be more consistent on offense. Got blocked by Hugelen a couple of times in the second half.
Janine Oxley (8) big perimeter player with speed. scored off transition nicely. RF: need more consistency on out side shooting. Don't take an expensive two (with your toe on the 3 line).
Brittnye McSperron (4) strong, decent ball handler, RF: need more offense/scoring. Outside shot needs to be developed. Finish drives.
Brittany Rud (13) the only real consistent shooter Eastview has. Likes baseline shots. Shoots off the pass well, and drives if given a crack. RF: needs to tighten up defense.
The rest: RF: shooting range and passing all need sharpening.
Trench player: Maggie Bauernfeind, but don't disappear at the end
