Out & About: Kennedy/Eastview

#3 posting 1/17/2006

Bloomington Kennedy 54, Eastview 38
#1AAAA Kennedy beat up on section rival by 16, but they did it with out Jenna Smith scoring a point until 10:31 to go in the game. They did do it with their interior size. Their three posts delivered 85.2% of the points. Yet the game started out rather slowly.
Eastview took the early lead 4-0, as JFK did not score their first four possessions. After a Heather McPhie three to put JFK up 5-4 Eastview went on a 3 possession scoring spree, their longest until mop up time, to go up 10-5. Eastview was playing a 2/3 zone which kept the inside game bottled up. JFK was 2/13 on their possessions to start the game--about as cold as it was outside 15.4 %. Eastview's biggest lead came at 10-5 with 10:14 to go in the first half. After that JFK went on a 13-2 run to end the half. Katie Lukanich's only basket gave Kennedy the lead for good at 13-12. Both teams were quite deliberate and patient in the first half. Eastview went one possession with 26 touches (no points); JFK had a 23 possession session (an extremely long two by Ashley Robinson). JFK ended the half with five straight scoring possessions. Both teams were trying to dial long distance, but they kept getting the wrong answer. Kennedy missed eight in the first half, Eastview misfired on six.
JFK didn't have the problems on offense in the second half like they had in the first half. Robinson, who finished with 21, scored on a cut in the lane off a pass from Steinbauer. Then she was fed by Smith, then she stepped out to the 3 line and connected to put the lead at 27-16. Eastview took a time out. After a Johnson basket, and two non scoring possesions by each team, Kennedy connected on 11/12 possessions. Robinson opened this scoring extravanganza with a three point play the old fashioned way, and then scored off another cut through the lane from Smith. Smith finally got on the scoreboard at 10:31 on a put back. Eastview tried to full court press, but their was no problems for JFK. In fact Robinson connected on two bombs to Smith for layups during this run. Kennedy's biggest lead was 23, 52-29. During this offensive phase JFK did quite a bit of two player action (pass & cut). With two minutes to go Eastview's offense started to hum. They scored five straight possessions. This occurred during bench clearing time, but some starters were in as late as 19.9 second to go for JFK. My advice would be get players out when the game is over. I've seen players go down with season ending injuries when the outcome is over. It is not worth the risk.

Height matters: Kennedy 5-11.4, Eastview 5-10.2
Department of Defense: JFK man/full court; Eastview 2/3 to start, man later, full court zone and man

Kennedy Player evaluations
starters
Ashley Robinson, 21, 14, 150.0, .714 Strong performance. New career high, scored almost in every conceivable way from put backs, and post ups, to 3s and cuts. She also brings up the ball during the press (mainly as relief). Defensively swatted shots. RF had a bit of foul trouble.
Tara Steinbauer, 16, 17, 94.1, .500 more effective inside tonight. Like all JFK posts can step out and cause mismatch problems. RF: more consistent from the outside.
Jenna Smith, 9, 10, 90.0, .400 a force inside. intimidating in the paint. Good anticipation on defense. Runs the floor well. Didn't have a great night shooting, but kept plugging away. Also brought the ball up when team was pressed. RF: I am not a fan of her bounce pass technique
Tasha Mrosak, 0, 2, 0, .000 role player. specialty is defense. RF: needs to be consistent from the outside (maybe deliver five points) during post season.
Heather McPhie 5, 2, 250.0, 1.000 another role player that gets the ball to the big 3. But she also can deliver. In fact the 250 is the highest score yet. She will not try to do to much with the ball, but can shoot as evidenced by the three in the first half. RF: I don't believe she would be at 250 if she had 14 or even 8 possessions. Take these numbers in context.
bench
Kesha Brown, 1, 2, 50.0, .500 decent speed, quickness.
Katie Lukanich, 2, 3, 66.7, .333 another perimeter player.
JFK has had success without having a guard drill from the outside, or a guard score consistently. Brown may be the one to rise to the next level. She has had four double figure games so far.

Eastview Player evaluations
Starters
Brittnye McSperron, 10, 11, 90.9, .455 scored off drives including a challenge to Smith that went in. She is not afraid of being hit and was 6/6 at the line. RF: Perhaps scoring off the pass instead of always putting the ball on the floor.
Cassie Johnson 9, 12, 75.0, .417 posts up, defends inside with good feet and blocks shots without too many fouls. RF: didn't like the physical game. drifted to the outside during the later part of the game. Only two baskets for the night.
Janine Oxley 7, 12, 58.3, .333 RF: needs to develop consistent outside shot. only scored two baskets, one on transition
Siri Hill 2, 4, 50.0, .250 RF: not a factor on offense
Erinn North 0, 2, 0.0, .000 RF: even more so
Bench
Cassie Sheppard 2, 4, 50.0, .250
Brittany Rud 2, 2, 100.0, 1.000 Can score, but probably built for zone offense, and probably not built for man defense.
Kristin Petersen 2, 3, 66.7, .333
Jenny Wesser 4, 2, 200.0, 1.000
In the trenches: Here's to you Miss Robinson.

BY THE NUMBERS
team, points, possessions, pp100, scoring %
Kennedy 54, 51, 105.9, .509
Eastview 38, 52, 73.1, .385
The pace as you can see was quite deliberate. The average from what I have seen when charting is 66 possessions. After JFK's slow start (2/13) they ended up humming with a scoring % of .632.
