ANALYSIS: All conference Part 1
This is a look at who has made all conference in College and what they accomplished in high school.
First off we look at D1 and the states I have been focusing on (so far)
MN
Minnesota produced 69 D1 players in the last season, but only three claimed All Conference honors: Carolyn Kieger (Roseville) Marquette; Tamara Braun (Prior Lake) Valparaiso; and Jenna Stangler (St. Michael-Albertville) also Valparaiso. Kieger is the only guard in this group. The other two are are 6-2 or bigger. Each of these three are from different HS classes. So the well has not been flowing freely. The year before there were 8 AC players and all were from the HS class of 2000. So looking back we can state the 2001 class (only Stangler) was not as powerful as 2000. I am holding off final judgement, but let's just say that the clock is ticking past 2:00 and the other classes (02, 03) are down by 12.
It may be to early to judge the 04 class, but only three were starters last season out of 20: VandeVenter (Osseo) Iowa; Mia Johnson (Mpls North) St. Louis; Melissa Miller (Breck) Northwestern. Johnson has since left St. Louis for Michigan State and is sitting out this season. She is found on the roster however.
Looking at the HS/C point ratio Kieger is at .428; Braun .697; and Stangler .788.
Now the question is how were these three rated as seniors.
Stangler was rated prior to the number system and prior to the class listing. I had her in the center category. She ended up #7 with these names above her--Podomonick, Longfors, Gibbs, Hansen, Collison, Thomas. Of these names you may not be familiar with Longfors. She ended up at Florida on the track team doing throws. She has been All American twice. Gibbs and Hansen ended up at North Dakota State University, but Hansen is no longer on the roster. Podominick and Collison are at Minnesota. Thomas went to Chicago State, but did not finish there.
Kieger was rated prior to the number system that I have developed. I had her #3 in the 2002 class. Schonrock and Bolden were rated above. Bolden was Miss Basketball and both Shannons ended up at Minnesota as starters.
Braun did have rating 53. She was #23 in the 03 class, and clearly underrated. Possible explanations are the maturing of a bigger player. These ratings were based on Junior level play and Braun averaged 14.2 ppg. Looking in the rear view mirror she would have been rated 62.8 after her senior season. This would have moved her up to #11 if everybody else remained the same. Of the top 10 that year 8 are still playing ball. In the center division she came in #6 with Podomonick, Theisen, VandeVenter, Langen, Bildeaux above. Selina Theisen started at Augsburg then transfered to Anoka-Ramsey Community College and won a national championship. No word on her status this season.
One similarity these 3 players had was they all played at some point in their HS careers in the State Tournament. Only Stangler won a championship and that was in her senior year in OT against New London-Spicer.
