Out & About: Edina/Wayzata

Edina 54, Wayzata 50
Tonight I found the right gym at the right time. Thank goodness.
Edina led from start to finish, but the comfortable lead melted like the snow pack this week.
Edina jumped to a 7-2 lead early. Wayzata was 1/6 on it's first possessions. Either they turned it over--3 times, or missed the 3 (twice). Wayzata cut the lead to 9-7 then Edina scored on three straight possessions. One feature that was to be a strong factor in Edina's win was the offensive rebound. Edina had 16 second chance points on the night. Edina led 22-18, but they finished the first half with a 10-4 run. They also had a 4/6 possession rate at the end of the half.
Edina picked up where they left off at half time by scoring on 7/9 possessions. They outscored Wayzata 12-6 to start the half. Lauren Young came to life at this point with 8 points. Edina led 44-28 which was to be the high water mark for the Hornets. Then it was like the switch was turned off for Edina's offense and Wayzata started the long road back. Edina did not score in their next 8 possessions. Young was not shooting at this point and the shot selection was not the best. Wayzata started their comeback with a Katie Cougenhour 3. But even Wayzata did not convert on four straight possessions, all missed 3s. Thompson made a three to stop that streak and trailed 44-35. Then Wayzata stated cooking with scoring on 6/7 possessions. During this stretch Thompson hit another 3 to cut the lead to 50-46. Edina turned it over on a bad pass and steal by Myers who converted the lay up. Now it was 50-48 and Edina's Lauren Young drove in for two to push it back to 52-48. Wayzata missed their next possession, and Young missed a one and one and O'Toole rebounded. Thompson scored from the right side and it was 52-50. Lauren Young drove from the right side, and Thompson blocked the shot from behind. Cougenhour missed her shot and it went off of O'Toole's fingers out of bounds. Jenny Grieg made her one and one free throws for the final result 54-50 with 34.1 seconds left. Wayzata missed on their last two possessions, and Edina missed their free throw.

Height battle: Edina 5-10, Wayzata 5-7.8. This was starters only. Wayzata gets bigger with Thompson.
Defense: both teams played man and also pressed full court. The press bothered Wayzata more.
A modification in these evaluations--I will be adding points, possessions, pp100, and scoring% then the observations. I will red the tops in each category
Edina Player Evaluations
Lauren Young 16, 15, 106.7, .600 big, lanky perimeter "3" type, Scored on drives, and rebounds, came up with big baskets and offensive rebounds when needed RF: needs to work on spot up shooting, and could use more strength
Katie Gilligan 12, 12, 100.0, .500 mader her living off offensive rebound put backs (3 baskets) late in the game when the initial Edina offense misfired. RF: needs more speed/strength
Jenny Greig 13, 12, 108.3, .500 point guard, tough, on fire in the first half from the floor off the drive, popped a 3, but RF: shot selection in second half left something to be desired. Also when confronted with pressure looks down quite a bit. As far as her numbers go she would have scored 220.0 in 100 possessions according to her first half, but her second half of 28.6 is ice cold. Need more consistency.
Laura Olsonoski 3, 4, 75.0, .500 strong inside, RF: wasn't a factor due to fouls, might be undersized for post HS post position.
Taylor Young 2, 3, 66.7, .333 Fresh Face, 8th grader, another big (5-10) perimeter player, good instincts RF: experience (which will come)
Megan Gaard 5, 8, 62.5, .250 Made her first shot RF: not a much of a factor on offense after that
Wayzata Player Evaluations
Krissy O'Toole 13, 13, 100.0, .538 Big and strong, Big broad shoulders, Takes up space, constant posting, Can feed the weak side from the low post and had many assists on 3s late in the game. Good free throw shooter as she made 7 of her 13 points at the line. RF: not fast of foot, also could be provoked to get too physical. Also makes a power dribble in the paint on almost every time she wants to go to score.
Katie Coughenour 12, 12, 100.0, .333 Her job is to shoot 3s. She made four on the night RF: never looked to drive, didn't go to the line, doesn't have much else in her arsenal
Kate Thompson 10, 9, 111.1, .400 Extremely thin, big, young, perimeter player. Matched up with Lauren Young on defense. Can score off the dribble and can drop 3s. Good promise. RF: needs to drink milk shake after milk shake. After that she needs to go to the weight room. Got into foul trouble
Kat Myers 7, 8, 87.5, .500 Lefty, drove baseline well RF: coming into game she was the leading scorer, but she did not step up to show me that.
Stacie Braegelman, 0, 5, 0, .000 Main point guard. RF Needs to contribute on scoring or no one will guard her
Kelly Russ, 4, 5, 80.0, .400 started, scored twice--on a drive and on a cut through the lane RF: Did not step up or stand out.
Trench player: Lauren Young

BY THE NUMBERS
team, points, possessions, pp100, scoring%
Edina, 54, 59, 91.5, .492
Wayzata 50, 59, 84.7, .373
Wayzata made 6 three pointers compared to Edina's two and that is why Wayzata's scoring % is low, but their point total is close to Edina's

Hopkins 56, Cretin-Derham Hall 49
Minnetonka 62, Armstrong 59
