Out & About: Cretin-Derham Hall/Park-Cottage Grove (+ Bonus)

Cretin-Derham Hall 60, Park-Cottage Grove 53
This Suburban East confrontation was between a veteran CDH and a bigger, youthful PCG. Experience prevailed. PCG starts on average 5-11.5, CDH started 5-9.4. CDH's average starting grades--11.2, PCG 10. The game was tied at 14 and Alyssa Karel dropped a three to give CDH the lead for good. CDH had two strong sequences when they scored 7/8 possessions early in the contest, and a 6/7 possession run to push the score to 31-23. At this point Karel had 14 with two threes and a couple of back cut lay ups on the 1-4. PCG had a stretch where they did score for five straight possessions.
The second half was a continuation of the first. CDH had leads of 13 in the second half. PCG was able to cut that down to the final margin 60-53 thanks in part to second shots. PCG had 10 points of second chances on the night. Not a good sign for CDH. PCG was also able to get the ball in the paint whenever they wanted. PCG did a good job of posting, but not of finishing.
Cretin-Derham Hall player evaluations
Alyssa Karel dominated the shooting tonight. When you shoot good, you look good, and Karel looked excellent tonight. In the first half she was 6/7 from the floor. She dropped three 3s on the night, and scored at least thee times from back cuts vs man defense. Besides her shooting, Karel is quite confident in her ball handling. RF: strength for next level.
Lindsay Laur big, strong, offensive minded, however RF: PCG had too many offensive rebounds. Need to pick up boards.
Lauren Gibbemeyer did not start tonight. Every game I have seen she is in foul trouble. Tonight was no exception. Within 10 seconds she picked up a foul during the diamond press. She also picked up shot blocking fouls. She needs to learn to play the game and not rely so much on ability.
Sarah Hendricks is a big freshman and scored their first points. RF: block out and rebounding. Needs strength
Park-Cottage Grove player evaluations
Sarah Nohrenberg ran the point, at 5-11 can see the floor. Likes to drive. RF: needs to develop a better outside shot. Did not score without dribbling.
Jackie Voigt, like most of the PCG players, looks like a player. Crashes the offensive boards, plays in and out. Likes the perimeter and can face the basket at 6-1. RF: at one point in the second half coach said to "take her" as Voigt was dribbling. Voigt needs to recognize that she can dominate a kid and just do it.
Tina Fisher, active on the boards, posts up well. RF: Experience (9th grader)
Trench player: Alyssa Karel took over and made it stick.

BY THE NUMBERS
teams, points, possessions, pp100, scoring %
Cretin-Derham Hall 60, 60, 100.0, .467
Park-Cottage Grove 53, 60, 88.3, .467
If you notice both teams scored the same %. Part of this is CDH had a couple of 3s, and PCG and some possessions where they only cashed in one free throw.
If you notice the scoring % is .467. Defensively each team needs to tighten up.

BONUS
Tartan 75, Hill-Murray 51
The Classic Suburban Match up was not close as reported by Reliable Source
Hill-Murray was cold shooting 10 to 15%, and Tartan was hot shooting 80-90% in the first half. It went from a four point game to a 20 point game in the first six minutes. At halftime Tartan was up 38-13. The size difference was the difference. Storer (HM) and Klingsporn (T) were trading 3s. Tartan shut down Dillon, and Huset and Privatsky took turns shutting down Storer. They were in her jersey all night.
In the second half HM outscored Tartan by one.
Katie Haas (T) is learning to use her size.
