Tonight we take a look at the D1 all conference players from last season from the Dakotas. Both states have small population bases to work from, both states have recent additions to the D1 ranks (North Dakota State, South Dakota State).
North Dakota had two AC players and they were both at North Dakota State: Leah Klabo (MayPortCG) and Katie Lorenz (Langdon). Both were from Class B (the smallest class). ND only had 7 total D1 players last year, six of which were at NDSU. Even the non NDSU player, Jenna Lemnus (Enderlin) Louisville is now returning home to NDSU and is sitting out this season. Lorenz C/HS ratio was .601 last year. I did not have ratings for the earlier players, I started rating ND in 03. Looking at my raw data Lorenz had an 98 without the screens in. There were no 08s in D1
South Dakota's AC players were Shannon Schlagel (Clark) South Dakota State and Lindsay Thomas (Sioux Falls Roosevelt) Colorado State. Both players were 6-0 or bigger. I am only able to get Schlagel's C/HS ratio .837. She has since graduated. Thomas is in her final year at CSU. Clark was from an A school, Thomas AA. Thomas never lost a game in HS. Neither were rated in HS. SD's first ratings came in 04.
South Dakota had eight players rostered from the 08 class (04 HS) and had two start last year. That has already changed this season. The two were Jeana Hoffman (Mitchell) Texas State and Jordan Stapp (Newell) Jacksonville State. the C/HS ratio had different results however. Hoffman's was .279 and now is .480 this season as she starts again. Mitchell is in the largest class, and Hoffman at 5-8 is slightly under the average height for guards.
However Stapp has left Jacksonville State for Emporia State a D2 school in Kansas. Her ratio last year was .063. Part of this may be that she played in Class A (the second of three classes), also 5-4 did not help her cause against bigger kids. This indicates that D1 may have not have been the right fit. It will be interesting to see how Stapp fits in at Emporia.
In that rating period I had Courtney Grimsrud (Sisseton) South Dakota State #1 with Stapp #3 and Jeana #5. Sister Jenna was #2, and she too is at Texas State and is starting this year. Stapp had too high of a rating at 62. After each season I evaluate the screens used. Modifications have been kicked into the formula since then.
