Cali Hines, Madelia reached the 1000 point mark with 17 points in a 52-36 loss to LeCenter. Hines is the first girl from Madelia to reach the 1000 point level. Joni Bowman reached 1000 on a Madelia-Truman team.

Out & About: Rockford/Zimmerman

Rockford 76, Zimmerman 73
This was a match up between two AA teams from the exurbs of Minneapolis: Zimmerman, a third year school in the Elk River district in the north; and Rockford, a state tournament entrant last season, from the west.
There was no "trying to get in synch" as both teams found the bottom of the net early and often as opposed to what I have been seeing lately. Right from the tip, Ann Schmitz of Rockford stole the ball from Kara Norris drove down and was fouled. She scored the first points at the line with five seconds gone. Zimmerman answered right back with Ashley Schleper. And so it went for the whole game. There were periods of inactivity due to turnovers, usually passes that were forced or too long. Zimmerman scored the first four times they had the ball in a half court situation. They worked it inside and Norris scored 8 of their first ten points. Zimmerman held leads of four (10-6) and then Rockford tied it at 10. Zimmerman's Schleper dropped two 3s as they pushed the lead to 20-14. Z pushed it out to 33-23 as they scored on six straight possessions. The inside game of Norris, and Kari along with a Schleper bomb and flash cut helped in that flury. Then both teams went into a hibernation phase as Z was 0/5, and R was 0/4 on their possessions. Rockford snapped out of the doldrums quicker with 6 straight scoring possessions with Schmitz scoring 10 points from the 3 line, an old fashioned three point play, a drive and two at the line. That 10 point lead lasted as long as the ice sculptures in the St. Paul Winter Carnival as Rockford went on a 14-5 run. Rikki Skafte hit an elbow shot for the Rockford lead of 39-38. Schmitz hit another 3 from the left side for the final half time lead 42-38. Zimmerman went the last 8 possessions without scoring. Part of that was due to Norris' foul problems. Part of it was due to the 2/3 zone that silenced the Thunder.

Rockford kept up the pace in the second half as they went on an 8-0 run to open the half. Rockford held it's biggest lead at 50-38. It took Zimmerman until it's 8th possession before they scored. So if we look at both the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half Rockford outscored Zimmerman 27-5 with Zimmerman's floor production 2/23 or an extremely frigid .087. Then Zimmerman came back to life. Leading the charge was Tessa Butau off the bench with a 3 from the left side. With that spark Zimmerman Thundered back and went on a 25-12 run. Butau contributed 13 of those points with three 3s, and she hit the shot that gave Zimmerman the lead 63-62.

Schmitz tied the game back up with a free throw. Norris scored twice on post ups to give Zimmerman a 67-63 lead with 4:56 left. Schmitz scored for Rockford, but then Downing cashed in a 3 to give Z the lead 70-65. Schmitz was fouled and made the first free throw, and rebounded the miss on the second shot. Eventually she was fouled again and it was 70-67 Z. Schleper missed a 3, and Schmitz scored on a missed shot by Ungerecht 70-69 Z. Katilyn Houser made the first free throw and Rockford's Ungerecht scored to tie it a 71 with 2:12 to go. Both teams then had scoring droughts thanks to turnovers. Z had 3 straight possessions with the last at 0:59 an offensive foul on a screen. Rockford on that next possession added one to their total with a Schmitz free throw. Schleper came down drove down the left side of the lane to give the lead back to the Thunder 73-72 0:35 left. Schmitz answered with another basket with 11 seconds left. Houser tried to throw a pass that was too long and it was intercepted by Ungerecht. In the ensuing seconds the ball was knocked out of bounds with one second left. And Schmitz added an exclamation point to her performance as she snuck behind the defense for another chip shot in the 76-73 win.

Height Matters: Zimmerman 5-9, Rockford 5-8.8
Department of defense: both teams pressed early. Rockford went from man, to 2/3 back to man at the end. Zimmerman played both. I would not characterize either team a brick wall on defense. I think the offensive decision making and ball handling for both teams needs to improve. Both teams benefited defensively by getting rid of the press. Too many layups for the other team and not enough turnovers made it ineffective. If the goal was to increase tempo then it worked.

Ann Schmitz 37, 23, 160.9, .783 since I have been charting these games on an individual basis (since J13) Schmitz has the highest pp100 total by 10.9 and her floor % is now the leader (for those with more than 10 possessions) by 69 points. Tied a career high set on J19 vs Kimball. Schmitz is a heady player, aggressive as was demonstrated by her opening tip steal. She scored in almost every conceivable way, but did quite a bit of damage in the paint. She made 13 free throws so is knows how to get to the line. Can drive and dish. RF: she may not be able to score in the paint against bigger kids post HS. strength training will be good and useful.

DEFINITIONS
Possessions=the end result is measured. Only four things can happen. Either the player scores or misses a FG or FT, or turns it over. Sally may shoot and miss, but if her team rebounds it does not count as a possession for her. Only the termination of possession matters in this system.

PP100=What a player would average if they had 100 possessions. 1 point for 1 possessions would get a player 100.0. In theory a player could shoot once and hit a three. They would then have a pp100 rating of 300.0. That is why one should look at possessions and not get flamfoozeled by a high pp100 rating. A low pp100 means the player misses too many shots or coughs it up too much.

Floor/scoring %=a player (or team's) scoring possessions divided by total possessions.

STATE TOURNAMENT TRENDS
There are three main indicators that need to be looked at in past tournaments and then we see the trends this season. The three big indicators are: 1. Strength of schedule; 2. Defense against quality opposition; 3. margin against quality opposition. I call these teams Qteams.

AAAA
The 3 numbers to pay attention to--14; 45.3 (adjusted for 36 minutes), 14.8
At this point in the season Bloomington Kennedy is under for defense and over for margin (17.2). They are the only AAAA team to achieve that. Only two other teams are above +10 on margin--Mpls South (14.6) and Hopkins (10.6). Woodbury reaches the defensive mark, but is only a 2.0 on margin. St. Paul Central is close in margin (8.7), but allows 55.6 against Qteams. All the other top 10 teams have margins under 5.7, some are close to 0.

The 3 numbers: 15, 50.6, 12.4
Three teams are playing a tough schedule, and all three are holding the top 3 spots: Marshall, Detroit Lakes, Benilde-St. Margaret's. However only Marshall and Detroit Lakes have beat the margin level that is championship level. BSM is only 4.7. Both Marshall and DL are under in the defensive level. Hibbing has strong showings on defense and margin, but their schedule is too thin according to trends. They have only played 3 Qteams.

The 3 numbers: 18, 38.1, 14.9
Most teams have two bases covered, but no one has all three. The #1 team Breck comes closest as they have a 45.3 defensive rating. Barnesville is the lowest at 35.2, but do not play the strong schedule like Breck. Rochester Lourdes is at 39.2, but their margin is at 6. Also the suspension of Breland will throw off some of the momentum they were building. MVL has a high Qmargin as does Kingsland, Albany, and Crookston. The thing these teams lack: MVL plays a class A schedule and gives up 52.9. Giving up over 50 is almost a death sentence for AA championship level. Crookston gives up 58 and does not play that strong a schedule. Kingsland and Albany have defenses in the mid 40s. Kingsland plays a stronger schedule than Albany.

The 3 numbers: 13.5, 51.2, 12.3
The first thing you may notice is the defensive number pops up to 51.2. Qteams are hard to play day in and day out in A. The team right now with the toughest schedule is Lakeview with 7 games. Elgin-Millville is at 6 and they play AA schedules. The others are 4 or under. Lakeview is under on D, and over on Qmargin. Browerville and Ada-Borup also have those numbers covered, but neither plays that strong a schedule. Two teams Barnum and Elgin-Millville have negative Qmargin numbers. Not a good sign. What about the #1 team Osakis? They have schedule problems, give up 55.5 (second highest in the top 10), and margin is 8.3.

LAYING IN THE WEEDS
These are teams that are sub .500 right now that will have a major impact on what happens in their sections. I'm not saying all of these teams will get to state, but they will determine who will go in some manner. If teams are not paying attention and just look at records they may be sent packing.
AAAA
Blaine: went to state last year, 7 is wide open, 6-12 record, but margin is a +0.3. They are in most games. Last 4 games offense is up 10 points. Defense is down 3. Margin is at 13.8 Blaine is 6-12
Mounds View: plays in tough Suburban East, but is in section 5. That race is wide open. margin right now is at -6.7. MV is 6-13.
Another team that is sub .500 in that section is Armstrong. They have 7 losses against state rated teams. There are none in 5. Armstrong is 8-10.
Elk River: Their margin is at -1.6. They have one big advantage--they have pinned the only loss on St. Cloud Tech, the probable #1 seed in 8. ER is 7-11
AAA
Lakeville South: plays in the brutal Lake and has only played one game against a AAA team (New Prague) and they beat them 51-45. Their record is 4-14, and margin is -9.3.
Minneapolis North: the three time defending state AAA champs are 3-14, and have faced a lot of adversity this season losing players to transfers, and Maurika Carlisle to a knee injury. However Coach Patterson has transformed this group into a force to be reckoned with. They are averaging 56.4 in January with games in Chicago over the MLK break and game against Burnsville and Armstrong were close. But the thing that should make 5AAA very very afraid was what happened last Thursday at Roosevelt. North won 78-73. North has been to the state every year since the 4 class system has been in place. Do not look past the Polars for a return trip.

There are no teams that are sub .500 that have a snow flakes chance in a blast furnace to get to state.

Rochester Lourdes' Anne Breland has been suspended for a rules violation according to the Rochester Post-Bulletin. She did not play in the 57-49 loss to Winona Cotter on Friday. Lourdes had not lost to Cotter since 1985. Breland may be out until mid February.

Today was a 4AAAA type of day with games at St. Paul Johnson and North St. Paul. The only non 4AAAA team was Duluth East (they took on Johnson). Roseville, the defending section champ, traveled down MN36 to NSP.

Game #1
St. Paul Johnson 47, Duluth East 46
Last time I tried to see DE I only saw the second half. Today I missed the first 30 seconds. So it is a little better view. I can sum up this game with two slogans--missed firing 3s, and turnovers. Neither team looked outstanding on the offensive end, and I'm not prepared to credit the defenses.
Early in the contest DE held the lead. Their biggest leads were 6, the last coming at 16-10. Marisa Yernatich had six of DE's first 10 points. Danielle Mathis was the tugboat for SPJ with five of their first six. Mathis posted, was fouled, and worked the offensive boards. Her counter part was Julia Rickert. The matchup was at times looked like a sumo wrestling match with the bodies looking for leverage at the blocks. Mathis gave SPJ the first lead at 19-18, as they finished a 8-2 run. SPJ's biggest lead in the first half was a 25-22 margin on an Ebony Black put back basket and one. Becky Anderson ended the half with two free throws with 2.0 seconds left and both teams were tied at 28.

DE imitated the first half by grabbing the early lead again at 33-28. Yernatich cashed in a three for the extra margin. Mathis answered with three straight scoring possessions and SPJ was up 34-33. SPJ pushed that lead to six at 45-39. During this time DE had strings of 0/7 possessions of which were three turnovers. But DE got their act together and outscored SPJ 7-2 the rest of the way. The problem was that left them one short. Alex Moore scored what proved to be SPJ's final points on a drive for a 47-43 lead. Rickert made a free throw to cut it to 47-44. 2 SPJ turnovers, and two missed 3s by DE later Essence Tyler was fouled and missed a one and one. Yernatich rebounded and Alanna Scott was fouled and made her two shots. Tyler was fouled again and missed again. This time Rickert rebounded. DE had four shots in the last 11.6 seconds to win, the last time with 4.8 seconds left out of bounds under the basket. Becky Anderson received the ball, drove the lane and her shot was not close.

Department of Defense: everyone did a bit of both. SPJ pressed and looked to trap 1/2 court and full at times. SPJ also tried 1/3/1 zone.

Roseville 60, North St. Paul 40
This game featured two teams tied together by MN 36. Roseville made a statement that the road to the state will go through them. It was a tale of two halves. Roseville was clicking in the first half with the pp100 hitting 108.6 and scoring % at .543. But the 2nd half exposed another type of Roseville with pp100 at 73.3 and scoring % at .400. (.400 is about average for the teams I have been charting, but average teams don't go to the Target Center).
The game was tied at 2 and after that Roseville held the lead the rest of the game. Roseville had strings of scoring of 4/4, 3/3, 4/5, and only had missed chances of two a couple of times. Nash-Garloch had six of the first 8 Roseville points. In three straight possessions for Roseville Talisha Barlow had a drive to the glass, a free throw, and a three from the right side. Then Amy Beggin, the point guard and leader of the triumverate scored the next five points. NSP, by contrast, had one string where they scored in three possessions, but their droughts consisted of 4, 6, 4, and 5 possessions. Beggin ended the half with a pull up jumper and Roseville led 38-22.

Roseville at the start of the second half came out flat. Coach Thielke was asking for more energy and took a time out after three possessions without a connection trying to shake the complacency. NSP had a 5-0 run to start the half including a 3 from Carolyn Mobley. NSP had strings of 3 and 4 scoring possessions in the second half, but they had a deeper hole to dig their way out of. Roseville never really got into rythym until late in the game with a string of 5 straight scoring possessions and 6/7.

DEFINITIONS
Possessions=the end result is measured. Only four things can happen. Either the player scores or misses a FG or FT, or turns it over. Sally may shoot and miss, but if her team rebounds it does not count as a possession for her. Only the termination of possession matters in this system.
PP100=What a player would average if they had 100 possessions. 1 point for 1 possessions would get a player 100.0. In theory a player could shoot once and hit a three. They would then have a pp100 rating of 300.0. That is why one should look at possessions and not get flamfoozeled by a high pp100 rating. A low pp100 means the player misses too many shots or coughs it up too much.
Floor/scoring %=a player (or team's) scoring possessions divided by total possessions.

Out & About: Centennial/Coon Rapids

No, that wasn't the half time score. Both teams came into the game averaging much more than the final score indicated. Centennial came in with 70.3 and Coon Rapids with 64.5. Both were held under their averages by 20 points. But I am not going to credit cellophane defenses.

Centennial, or Katie DeWitt, picked up right where they, or she, left off on Tuesday in the 119-93 game. DeWitt scored Centennial's first 8 points as she dominated the paint with quick turnaround jumpers. CR started the game off plain off as they were 0/7 with their possessions. Randi Hill, Chelsea Lyons, and Jazmin Townsend were working the weave up top hoping to break free for a lay up, or to set the tempo for the night. They achieved their goal with tempo. Centennial led 8-2. But CR stormed back with a 18-8 run. During this time DeWitt picked up her second foul and spent the remainder of the half riding the pine. Lyons provided CR with their first lead at 16-14 on a three. CR's biggest lead was 20-16 on a steal and lay up by Randi Hill. But then Centennial righted their ship to close out the half with an 8-2 run. Emily Becken scored six of these points including the drive at the end of the half to return the lead to Centennial 24-22.

Centennial was tied once at 26 in the second half, but held the lead thre rest of the night. But it was a nip and tuck affair. Centennial came up with four straight possessions with points in the middle of the half, an echo from Tuesday's accomplishments. They broke from a 32-30 game to 39-32 during this stretch. CR came back with a high low to Hudson, and, after no scores for each team for 3 possessions, Lyons scored off a lay up to cut the lead to 39-36. Centennial pushed that lead back to 7 at 43-36. Lyons missed a three then Centennial went to shut down mode. They were playing near the time line when Kellie Schueneman lost the ball and Jazmin Townsend scored the lay up plus one in the resulting scramble to make the score 43-39. Amanda Nygaard was fouled and made the first free throw, but missed the second. Townsend was fouled on the rebound and sank both free throws to cut that lead to 44-41. Kellie Schueneman missed her free throw. In the resulting half court action for CR, Lyons was fouled after rebounding a missed three. She made both free throws and the lead shrunk to 44-43. Joelle Waytashek was sent to the line, but she missed the free throw. This time Katie DeWitt grabbed the rebound and the next time Waytashek converted both free throws for the final margin. CR came down and never really had a good luck at the basket as they tried 3s. Another key rebound by DeWitt sealed the win for Centennial.

Tonight I traveled to the exurbs of the SW Twin Cities to Victoria, home of the Holy Family Fire to watch the battle between the two private schools in the Minnesota River Conference. Mayer Lutheran had a 9-6 record coming in compared to Holy Family's 8-10. Just two weeks ago Mayer Lutheran won 64-62. ML led twice tonight, the last time at 6-4. ML then hit a 7 possession run where they never got a shot off--just turnovers (3 violations, 4 bad passes). HF took advantage of this time to go ahead 12-6. Throughout the night ML tried to get the ball in to their posts Melissa Kloos and Sarah Stahlke. Those two combined for 33 points on the night. HF, on the other hand, relied heavily on the skills of Becca Friestleben who by herself had 33. HF led at one point 21-17, and then again ML hit a dry patch where they went 1/9. HF made a 10-1 run at this point. At the half HF led 33-20.

Coming out of the break, Becca Friestleben of the Fire was on Fire. She hit three 3s to start the half, one from a step and a half behind the line. With that firepower, HF took a 47-22 lead (14-2 run with BF cashing in 11). ML was 1/11 at that point on possessions with the turnover bug biting them on the rear end. Then the tables turned. ML went on a 17-0 run. Again it was the inside game that ML relied on. Kloos, then Stahlke converted three point plays the old fashioned way. What was once a 25 point lead was now 8 47-39. HF was in an 0-10 possession drought with four turnovers terminating their chances. Then, just as ML was looking stronger, HF caught fire again, and this time the hot hand belonged to Josie Campbell. She scored three straight times down the floor, twice off layups when ML was pressing. HF's run at this point was 8-2. ML had a chance to cut the lead to 8 when Kloos scored and was fouled. Kloos missed the free throw, but ML retrieved the rebound, but they missed three times before Becca Friestleben grabbed the ball for HF. At that point it was 57-47 HF. HF closed the game on a 12-6 run to win 69-53.

I liked her anticipation. On the jump, ML won the tip, but BF moved right to the ball and cut off the ML player. Grabbed game by the throat. A difference maker. Part of what I call the Whalen generation. RF: sometimes forced things that were not there on offense. Came in at the wrong angle on a couple of drives and had no glass to work with. Ball handling can improve. Likes to put the ball on the floor. Sometimes came down and shot without involving anyone else in the offense (on 3s). Needs to come to the ball when her teammates are struggling.

DEFINITIONS
Possessions=the end result is measured. Only four things can happen. Either the player scores or misses a FG or FT, or turns it over. Sally may shoot and miss, but if her team rebounds it does not count as a possession for her. Only the termination of possession matters in this system.
PP100=What a player would average if they had 100 possessions. 1 point for 1 possessions would get a player 100.0. In theory a player could shoot once and hit a three. They would then have a pp100 rating of 300.0. That is why one should look at possessions and not get flamfoozeled by a high pp100 rating. A low pp100 means the player misses too many shots or coughs it up too much.
Floor/scoring %=a player (or team's) scoring possessions divided by total possessions.

With Centennial and Champlin Park setting some new state records, I was thinking what was the number of possessions for the game. With my charting of previous games the most was 87 (Hopkins/Henry Sibley), the average is 66. Looking at Centennial's shot attempts according to the StarTribune was 66. Let us say that the possessions were 87. If that was the case Centennial in 100 posssessions would have scored 136.8 points while Champlin Park would have been at 106.9. If they were average (something I doubt) with 66 possessions it would be Centennial 180.3 and Champlin Park at 140.9. In the two previous games I have charted Centennial had 68 possessions against Hill-Murray; Champlin Park 66 vs Osseo.
As far as scorring % goes, that is even more speculative. Centennial was at .426, CP .455 when I charted in their previous games. Hopkins had the best against Cretin-Derham Hall with .647. If we take that as the bench mark then Centennial would have scored on 56 possessions. My guess is they were better than that. That is because at twice that level it comes to 112.6. My guess is they scored on at least 59 possessions for a .678 scoring %. CP then would have come in at .534.

As reported last night this net scorcher set some new records for a game in MN. The old mark for both points scored and points by a losing team was set in J3, 2003 when Dassel-Cokato beat Litchfield 89-88 in 3 OT. So that record had 44 minutes worth of action. Last night's record had 36 minutes worth of action.

Out & About: Maple Grove/Park Center

This game featured two NW Suburban schools, and also 5AAAA foes. In a grind it out affair, MG beat PC 44-37. As has been the case lately neither team came out on fire. MG was 3/10 with their possessions to start, which was the same as PC. MG started out the game going inside and it payed off with two fouls. MG was able to post up all night as PC played behind. MG was more physical and controlled the offensive boards most of the night. The game was tied at 6, 9, 11 early on. Then MG hit a hot streak with three straight scoring possessions, the last two a cut by Sonja Ellingson through the lane, and an Ellingson three from the left side to give them a 16-11 lead. The biggest lead of the night came on two free throws by Emily Hoskins at 18-11. PC hit a 0/6 dry patch in the first half--four of which were missed 3s, and two turnovers. Late in the half PC did find the range from behind the arc with Briana Blackhawk and Jamie Zelinsky connecting. The score at half was 20-17 in favor of MG.
The pace of the night did not change in the second half. Everything was quite deliberate. Early in the half MG scored on six of their first ten possessions, just like PC, but MG was at the line for four of those possessions, PC toed the line three times. But that was the end of PC's scoring at the line for the rest of the night. PC took the lead at 23-21 with Jamie Zelinksy's two free throws. PC either had the lead or was tied from that point until Sonja Ellingson drove the baseline, was fouled and scored the basket and one for a 34-33 lead for MG. Megan Thompson answered for PC's last lead. For the last 2:56 MG outscored PC 10-2. Ellingson gave MG the lead for good with two more freethrows. A miscommunication between two PC players resulting in a pass to no one broke the see saw battle. MG converted on free throws their last 7 possessions. Another key play was when Christine Dwyer grabbed a free throw off a missed free throw by Sadler. That kept the ball out of PC's hands when the score was 39-35. MG added a free throw as PC came down and cast up 3s that failed to hit the mark.

CP had three players with 20+ (Theisen, Schmidt, Fuller). My guess is this sets a record for points scored in one game by two teams (209), and most points by a losing team. It might also set records for a half. Centennial had 49 at half. CP scored 62 in the second half, Centennial 67. I would have needed three pens for this game.

South slays Giant Killer Rosemount
South remained unbeaten and they did it with balance in a 82-59 win over Rosemount. Rosemount could not duplicate their feat of hanging a loss on the only unbeaten team left in AAAA. Rosemount dumped Kennedy from the unbeaten ranks last Friday with a 44-41 win.
Tayler Hill led South with 21 and was joined by five other Southerners in double figures.

With Highland Park coming into the game with a 10-4 record and St. Croix Lutheran coming in with a 3-11 record the result was to be expected. But it took a little bit longer to get the engine humming for SPHP. Actually SCL had a 17-13 lead in the first half as SPHP sputtered along. After that SPHP went on a 14-2 run in the space of five minutes to leave no doubt who was in charge. Brittany Dorsey had six of those points as she hit a three, made a free throw as she hit the offensive boards, and a steal and a layup. She ended up with a season high 19. HP started with a 1/6 possession ratio, then went on a four possession scoring binge. As quick as that, they turned back to frigid with five possessions going for nothing. During their big run they were 7/9. A key factor in their burst was shifting from zone defense to man.
The second half started quite differently than the first half with both teams converting on 3/5 possessions. But then SCL went 11 possessions in the wilderness and HP built their lead to 58-31 with a 19-0 run. At this point SPHP subbed quite a bit. They eventually had a 28 point lead, but then SCL's Alex Engelman came in a stroked three 3s in a row from the right wing spot and that lead melted to 17 points. SPHP's starters were right back in at that point and outscored SCL 14-7 the rest of the way. Kiara Allums immediately hit a three and had eight points during this run.

My guess is SPHP will have problems with teams that can block out, and have the same size they do. They are in the brutal section 3AAAA with four teams in the top ten. Even with an 11-4 record they may be no better than 7th out of 8 teams. That gives you an indication that the strength of this section.

Sister Ashley (02) had 1032, and brother Matt (04) 1226. She is the fourth girl to reach the mark from St. Mary's. Molly had 24 on the night against GFW.
Traci Nelson, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva scored her 1000th point in a 61-48 win over United South Central on J20. She had 16 on the night.

A Closer Look: North Dakota

With North Dakota State's Men winning at Wisconsin on Saturday, and the University of North Dakota women's team undefeated at 21-0, North Dakota has been at the center of basketball news this past weekend. Now let us take a tour of ND, the schools, and trends

First there are two classes in ND: A--big schools, divided into two conferences; and B--small schools, divided into 16 districts.
A schools provided over half the players in D1 & D2 with 12 players rostered last year. They had six starters, with only one AC player-Carissa Jahner at UND. The Eastern Dakota Conference sent 7 of these players on; the Western Dakota Association had five. So which conference performs better. The WDA had a C/HS ratio of .423, while the EDC was at .335. The interesting factor here is that Mandan of the WDA and a perennial power in the A level in ND had zero players playing D1 or D2 in the 2004-05 season. Bismarck Century provided three players for the most from the WDA, Fargo North had four to lead the EDC and the state. The 2007 (2003 HS) class had the most rostered and most starters last year with 8 and 4. 2006 (2002 HS) was shut out.
B had 11 players rostered, but the breakdown was shifted east. The four eastern border districts provided half of the B players rostered. If we look at the eastern 8 districts the number goes to nine. So Western ND only sent two players to D1 or D2. The B C/HS ratio was .440 which is higher than either of the A levels. The Bs were mainly an older group with 05s and 06s providing all the starters.
The learning curve for 08s start off with a .256 ratio (.291 A, .245 B) to 05s .431 ratio. So if you are looking at a B player averaging 20 ppg in HS you can expect about 4.9 as a first year player, and 8.6 as a senior on average.

DEFENSIVE ORIENTATION
These teams have been slamming the door when I have charted their games. Some of these teams are quite familiar as defensive brick walls, some may not have come to mind. Keep in mind these are only teams I have seen when using the charting method as described in Basketball on Paper.

The team that people would find odd on the list is Mounds View. They are the only one with a losing record (6-10). Perhaps it is a reflection of the opponent that day (Stillwater) and their offensive problems. Perhaps it is Mounds View offense that is holding them back. We will have to check back.
Through 33 games, 66 teams have played (some more than once). 11 teams have a points per 100 rating over 100 (in other words one point per possession). Only 8 teams have a scoring % over .500. Hopkins is in that group twice. In fact they have the best offensive performance so far this year with a 125.5 rating against Cretin-Derham Hall in the Apple Valley Semifinals. Breck is a very close second with their 124 against the #1AAA Marshall. Both teams were against quality opposition.
Defensively there have been five times a team has held an opponent under 60 points with the points per 100 possessions benchmark. Six times the defense has held an opponent under .300.

This is with the charting done since J13 with individual player possessions charted out. I have not, and probably will not retrofit all the games I have seen this year, but I will keep charting with these tools. I feel it gives a good indication of what a player can do. However it is only a snapshot. It would be better to have a complete record, but that is hard to achieve. Anyway here we go with the top five performances (must have had at least 10 possessions):
