COOPER AAU TOURNAMENT
Varsity Division Semifinals
METRO STARS 19U 57, QUEST 49

I reported on this game briefly yesterday on my Gabcast channel. First of all there are no time stamps for this game. I usually write down on stoppages the time, but with the clock kittywampus no one could get a good idea of the time.

Both teams started out rather slowly. After scoring on their initial possessions both team struggled to find the bottom of the net. The Metro Stars were 2/15 on their possessions with a seven possession drought. The Quest was 2/11. The Quest led 14-6 after a Cassie Hubler 3. The Quest maintained an 8 point lead up to 24-16. Hubler had 11 points at this point, and Becca Friestleben had 6. MS19 did rally to finish the half down 26-23 on a 7-2 run.

MS19 came out hot in the second half with Lauren Young delivering a three from the top of the key for their first lead 28-26. Friestleben answered right back with her own three. Another ironic fact was both were wearing #10. There were five more lead changes early in the half. Alyssa Benson scored on a lay up to give MS19 the lead for good at 34-33. Quest dropped into a 10 possession hole and they had trouble climbing out. Three of the possessions ended in turnovers. MS19 had a 10-0 run during the stretch and led 42-33. Slawson had six points in the run. The Quest had another five possession drought after scoring on two consecutive possessions. So in total Quest had a 2/17 offensive string. That decided the contest.

Robinson Miss Basketball

ROBINSON MISS BASKETBALL

St. Paul Central's Angel Robinson was named 2007 Miss Basketbal for Minnesota. She is the second player from Central to be named Miss Basketball joining 1979 winner Jean Tierney. Robinson had already picked up the AP, StarTribune, and Pioneer Press players of the year earlier this year. She also was the gbbrecruit POY.
Blake Hoffarber of Hopkins was Mr. Basketball.

COOPER AAU TOURNAMENT
If you haven't checked out my Gabcast of the games earlier today click here. I was expecting to see at least five games today, but it ended up only being three as some teams dropped, and the schedule was pushed forward. That meant the finals of the 15s and 17/19 were held at the same time.
In the games I saw:

Metro Stars 19 beat Quest 56-49 in the 19/17 semifinals

In the 15 semifinals: North Tartan 15 rallied from 8 down with five minutes left to beat Metro Stars 14 56-47. This was really 50-47, in my scribblings my zero looked like a six when I reported this earlier.

In the 17/19 finals it was NC Heat over Metro Stars 19 by the score of 68-55.

I will the out & abouts on these games during the week with Monday the 19/17 semis; Tuesday the 15 semis; and 17/19 final on Wednesday.

Out & About: Wayzata/Thunder 16

This game pitted a primarily JV squad from last year from Wayzata against a multischool squad made up from the most part from the Lake and Classic Lake. The single school was triumphant over the multiplex 37-30. The ironic thing is that the Wayzata team beat a couple of their classmates: Theresa Thour and Caitlyn Book. MYAS, in this tournament, ran 7 minute stop time quarters.

Thunder came out scoring on their first two possessions with Thour nailing one free throw and then Nicole Hanninen knocking down a 3. Wayzata kept it close at 4-3 with three free throws in their first three possessions. But for the most part neither team was that hot at the start with the Thunder after the initial outburst finishing the half 2/10 on their possessions with one drought of five, while Wayzata finished the quarter 0/8. It was 8-3 Thunder after one.

Wayzata didn't get their first field goal until 3:42 left in the second quarter. Alexa Clausen scored on an out of bounds situation. Wayzata had a few free throws before that and the score was 10-8. The Thunder was quiet for six possessions, but then rumbled for four straight scores late in the quarter to go up 18-10. Clausen scored to finish the point totals in the half 18-12 Thunder.

Wayzata came out with aggressive defense in the second half and forced turnovers which resulted in a lay up by Taylor Denz. Then Wayzata went on a seven possession drought. Thunder led again by 8 22-14. Thunder then was 1/8 the rest of the half, four of which were turnovers. Wayzata's heat started to bother teams. Wayzata finished the third quarter with a 7-2 run. It was 24-21 Thunder heading into the last seven minutes.

The four quarter opened with a bang as Jordan Risberg hit a three from the right corner to tie the game. Thour gave the lead back to Thunder on a drive. Then Risberg struck again, this time from the left wing for Wayzata's first lead 27-26. Liz Shay scored to put the Thunder in the lead for the last time at 28-27. Risberg anwered that by going coast to coast for a driving lay up and Wayzata never looked back. Of Wayzata's last 8 points, six came at the line. In crunch time Thunder went silent for five offensive possessions. They were getting shots, sometimes more than one, but nothing fell. Thour finally broke the ice, but with 1.9 seconds left comebacks are hard to achieve. Wayzata advanced to the finals 37-30. Ironically they will play the Thunder 19u team who beat Wayzata's II team 48-38. It was 40-38 until fouls and free throws gave way in the last minute of that semifinal.

The AAU Week That Was #4: All Star Edition

THE AAU WEEK THAT WAS #4: ALL STAR EDITION
The All Star games took precedent for me last weekend with games in Rochester and St. Thomas. I did catch some action at Lakeville South. The other big tournament across state lines was in LaCrosse and MN Teams did well with North Tartan taking the title from the Team WI Select 17 54-39. TEAM OF THE WEEK
As you can see it was a huge increase for the 4A teams this year. 4A won the event in both years, but 4A in 07 would, according to these numbers, beat the 2006 edition. That is the reason AAAA 2007 is the team of the week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The general of the 2007 AAAA team has to be Angel Robinson. She had 32 points total in the two games. She had wizardry with passing and helped disrupt offensive flow on defense. This is the third time Robinson has been named player of the week. She was the gbbrecruit player of the year for 2007.

So what does it all mean?
Only five times in the cross referenced lists did a player sweep all the major four awards (or three prior to 1995): Shannon Loeblein in 1991; Tamara Moore and Mauri Horton in back to back years 1998 and 1999; Liz Podomonick in 2003, and Jenna Smith last year. It is a bit unfair since out of the metro area players can't win metro player of the year. If we throw out the StarTribune list then you can add Katie Ohm in 2005 and Laurie Decker in 1987.
There won't be a sweep this year. Wolff took the Gatorade, Robinson has the AP and StarTribune.
The last Non HS state tournament winner to win the Miss Basketball was April Calhoun in 2001.

Hawaii will join the rest of the nation by playing their girls basketball season in the winter in 2008-09. With Michigan forced to move next year Hawaii was the last hold out with a different season. At the 17/19 division at Wayzata BK plus Elite beat Thunder Blue 43-37

At the 17II division at Coon Rapids it was Coon Rapids accelerating pas Accelerate 53-35.

At the 15I division MN Thunder rumbled past Woodbury 37-33.

In the 15III division at St. Louis Park MN Heat won four games.

I reported on this game earlier on my Gabcast site.
In a battle of teams away from the Twin City metro area it was SMMW topping Swish 47-41. The official score says 47-40, but the scorekeepers failed to add a free throw during a possession late in the second half for Swish.

It started out the other way with Swish swishing their shots, or at least Andrea Hagberg was. She had eight straight points as Swish led 8-0. All of Hagberg points were of the 3 point variety--one from behind the arc, and two of the & one variety. She missed one free throws. Swish led 12-4 then came up empty for 8 possessions. SMMW added five points during that stretch. Swish extended their lead to 18-9 after 3 straight scoring possessions. SMMW started their own little run of four on their next possession. Abby Rothenbueler started off the 8-0 run with five straight points as they closed to 18-17. SMMW then dried up for six possessions. The Swish's Jordyn Sears added four points with two lay ups to make it 22-17. SMMW tied it with 30 seconds left on a Rothenbuehler rebound basket.

Swish started off the second half with two & ones, but didn't get the free throws to drop. SMMW tied it up again at 26 on Rothenbuehler's put back. Then it was off to the Sahara as Swish endured a 9 possession drought and SMMW had a 6 dry spell. Only two of the possessions for each team ended up as turnovers, but no one exploited any advantage out of it. Alyssa Rushton scored five points in two possessions to make it 31-26 for SMMW. Brooke Dunsmoore scored twice for Swish and Hagberg capped off the 6 point run with a trey from the left corner. Swish led 32-31. Katie Lauer scored on two consecutive possessions, one a three and then a quick move in the paint. That started a 4/5 scoring spree and 9-1 run for SMMW to put them up 40-33. They would not trail the rest of the way. Swish closed to 42-41 with 2:30 to go on the 3rd of Hagberg's 3s on the day. But that was the end of the scoring for Swish as they went the next five possessions without finding the bottom of the net. SMMW's Chari Lehnertz made the first free throw, but missed the second. However Rushton was there for the put back and the one point margin became four 45-41. Rothenbuehler add a pair of free throws to close out the scoring.

SMMW lost in the semis to eventual champion Metro Stars 15s 45-43. They then lost in the 3rd place game to Metro Stars White 54-31 on Sunday.

Swish lost to MN Breeze in the consolation semis to MN Breeze 53-46. Swish won the friendship game with Northern Winds 60-43 on Sunday.

COACHING NEWS
Kathy McGee has resigned from Flint Powers and will be an assistant at Central Michigan. McGee coached 32 years and has racked up 599 wins. From the Flint Journal.

Mark McNabb has resigned at Gwinn. He had a 59-49 record in five years with the Modeltowners. From the Marquette Mining Journal.

Ishpeming is looking for a girls coach as Jason Lawson resigned. From the Marquette Mining Journal.

Ontanongon coach Dick Franti has decided to stay with the girls. He had coached both boys and girls when the seasons were seperate. From the Ironwood Daily Globe.

MINNESOTA REPORTS
TOURNAMENTS THIS WEEK
The AAU event is at Cooper this week. In the Varsity division NC Heat, North Tartan, and Quest are in one pool. Their finals will be at 3:15 on Sunday. The 15s finals will be a 2 pm.

In the MYAS division there are events at Wayzata, Eagan, Irondale, Richfield, Simley, Centennial and St. Olaf.

ADDING ROSTERS
I have added NC Heat's roster and web site last night and every day I update the roster list. If you don't see your roster up, or if you have a website that isn't up, let me know and I will get it posted and linked.

1000 TRANSFERS
1000 students have filed paperwork to transfer prior to the new rules that took effect on April 1. Not all may end up as transfers. From the Star Tribune.

I gave the initial report on Saturday night on the gabcast channel. Here are some other tidbits.

AAAA led the entire game except for one tie at 4. I always talk about pp100 and tonight both teams had 100 possessions which made it easy to know how many points each team would get in 100 possessions. As is the case in most all star games, transition and quick hitters were in style. The longest possession may have lasted 20 seconds. There wasn't any great offensive strings in the first half. AAAAs did hold AAs scoreless for 7, 5, and 7 possessions. The AAAAs had 16 points on transition, and 12 on second chancers. That compares to the four points combined for AA on both situations. The two advantages AA had were 3s and free throws. AA had a hard time scoring in half court situations as the defensive heat and height of AAAA took its toll.

In the second half the offensive spigot was flowing steady for both squads early. AAAA was smoking at 135.3 pp100 in the first 17 possessions. The biggest AAAA lead came at 69-38 with 17 minutes to go. At five minutes to go AAAA led 93-71. It seemed that AAAA was going to easily reach the century mark, but as the clock wound down and victory seemingly assured, AAAA started to get extremely creative with their shots, and passes. Again it proved that true simplicity is hard. The French Pastry looked good, but in the long run was not good for the offensive health. AA took advantage of the theatrics by going on a 19-6 run. They had four 3 point plays, one way or another. AA closed to 97-89 with under 45 seconds to go. No one had the feeling that AAAA was in danger of losing, but the 100 mark looked far away. Angel Robinson made sure they crossed over the threshold with an out of bounds basket and then a rebound and coast to coast pull up. That ended the scoring at 101-89.

For AA Amy Stifter had 20 points leading both teams. Stifter looked like she may blow away in a stiff wind, but she was wiry and was perfect at the line. Stifter had 8 of the last 10 points by AA in the first half.

I first reported on this game on Saturday on the Gabcast channel. I reported on the Sunday games yesterday. Here is a brief summary of Saturday's first contest.

The AAAs jumped out to an 11-5 lead with 7 of the points from Kachine Alexander in her first game back from a foot injury. It didn't look like she missed a beat with two transition lay ups off two of her own steals. The AAAs continued to build their lead with runs of six, and five twice. The As had a drought of five. The AAAs had transition lay ups early and used their size to advantage inside with Wolff, Booth and Williams combining for 33 points. It was 49-28 at half.

There really was no doubt in the second half who was going to win. The offenses did slow down a bit with both teams going a collective 1/13 during the middle of the second half, nine of which were missed shots. The AAAs led 84-53 with four minutes to go. The rest of the game was put in cruise control.

Macie Michelson played with the passion and intensity that she has been noted for before. Loose balls were her mission as she added to her floor burn collection. She was a little general on the floor getting teammates in position, directing traffic.

Rachel Booth had one of her best performances. She scored 10 straight AAA points late in the first half. She scored on post ups, rebound baskets, and didn't mind getting hit. Her ball fake and drive also connected.

Kelly Roysland was named MVP of the Minnesota Gophers at their end of the year banquet.

Metro Stars 15s Win Lakeville South AAU

LAKEVILLE SOUTH AAU TOURNAMENT
Metro Stars 15U wins the 16U D1 tournament at LV South this weekend with a 51-28 win over MN Summit Blue 16U in the championship game.

Alyssa Marschner (Armstrong) lead a balanced scoring attack for the Metro Stars 15U team with 10 points. All 10 players on the Metro Stars squad scored and the game went to running time at the mid-way point of the second half.

MYAS EVENTS
St. Francis beat a North Tartan team 53-45 to win the Champlin Park 17II title.

The Mpls Lady Cats 14s beat the Urban Stars 58-35 for the 16I title at Champlin Park.

Osseo edged the Lady Slippers 40-39 for the 15II title in Champlin Park.

MN ALL STAR CHAMPIONSHIP

Again I reported on these on Gabcast.

AAA started off up 8-0 with Rachel Booth connecting right off the bat with a three from the left corner. Macie Michelson had 8 of the first 11 points for AAA. Then Angel Robinson came in for AAAA and an 11-3 deficit turned into a 15-13 lead as they scored on six straight possessions. The game was fairly tight with a Latoya Williams lay up giving AAA its last lead at 36-35. Robinson erased that on the next possession and added two more to her game high 20 on the possession after that. AAAA never trailed after that. AAA did tie in once more at 42 on a drive by Kachine Alexander. Alyssa Karel gave AAAA the lead for good on a steal & lay up. AAAA led 47-43 at half.

Robinson connected on a trey to open the second half. The lead continued to build for AAAA out to 80-65. AAA did close but time was running out and AAAA won their second straight All Star Series 84-74.

There was a difference between the first and second game. The game was much faster paced and there was more french pastry in the moves. Robinson and Karel left fans wondering what was next. Others also tried to get in on the act. Michelson played with the intensity of scalding water. And it was the first time some casual fans got to see Janessa Wolff. They weren't disappointed. But they were disappointed to see her go to Penn State.

MN All Star Game
A 74, AA 72

I reported on this game in the gabcast earlier today. A scrambled back in the game after trailing by as many as 8 early in the second half. The critical point was when A trailed 55-50 charged back with by scoring on six of seven possessions on a 13-4 run. That made it A 63-57. Sami Mattson tied it at 63 with two consecutive 3s. There were six lead changes after that. AA went up on a Devin Bowlin steal and Samantha Gacke lay up in the press 72-71. Molly Mathiowetz was able to get a rebound on the next A possession and was fouled. She made the first free throw, but missed the second. Amy Stifter of AA got the rebound, but Tara Thielke anticipated her pass and stole it. Thielke got the ball to Kaitlyn Kramer and she found Mathiowetz low. She came back to the heart of the paint for Laura Kramer and she made the game winner with 1.1 seconds left for the 3rd place trophy. This was the third straight game decided on the last second shot counting last year's 3rd place and championship games.

ALL STAR CHAMPIONSHIPS
I have linked my gabcast channel on the right. On games where I will be out for a while I will put up my report from my phone to the gabcast channel. You will be able to tune in to that and hear what happened. I will later update this blog site with the numbers (pp100s/floor %) and more details.

Today in the 3rd place game the As came back to beat the AAs 74-72 on a last second shot by Laura Kramer from Fulda.

In the championship game it was AAAA topping AAA 84-74. It was the second straight All Star championship for AAAA.

I will get the numbers out later tonight. I said I would get them out on Wednesday, but I am going to get the games today out tonight.
I will put the numbers of the other games up later. stay tuned......
