SLEEPY EYE ST. MARY'S knights 50
In a Tomahawk conference game between two #1 seeds in the upcoming postseason, it was the Lutherans showing no love on Valentines Day to the Catholics in a reformation battle 69-50. This was a revenge game since SESM won the first match up 61-52. MVL has now won 11 in a row and have a 17-1 record in the Tomahawk. SESM saw a six game winning streak snapped. They are now 19-5 on the year and 3rd in the Tomahawk.
It was senior night and MVL was more than ready for the team that soiled their unblemished mark in the conference. For the first 20 possessions MVL scored 15 times and led 29-13. That came out to a eye popping 145 pp100 and .750 floor %. That pace turned out to be unsustainable as the night wore on. Seven points were on second chancers, six on transition. SESM their second time out at the 8:02 mark and shifted from zone to man. That threw MVL off their rhythm and SESM took advantage of a six possession drought with a 10-0 run to close to 29-23 and it looked like there was going to be a contest. MVL turned it around with their own 10-0 run and the game was never seriously in doubt after that. It was SESM's turn with a six possession drought. Leading the charge for the Chargers was Kara Black with 15 first half points.
The high water mark for MVL in the second half came at 59-31 and again at 67-39 with 4:11 left. MVL subbed liberally throughout the game, but the deep bench had the last four minutes for themselves. MVL didn't score the last 6 possessions.
Defensively MVL was very quick to the ball with two players doubling. There hands were active with plenty of deflections and disruptions. SESM never really got into their flow.
