1AA WEST SUBSECTION SEMIFINALS
PINE ISLAND panthers 50, KINGSLAND knights 36 overtime

Pine Island is the first team to knock off a #1 seed in the postseason in a game that was three games in one. PI had a 16-0 lead to start, had to rally to tie the game to send it to overtime and used the free throw line for the upset victory.

Since it is late (2 am right now) I will give you a thumb nail
PI's Whitney Canton connected on a three on the first possession. and that started off a 16-0 run. Kingsland started off with an unlucky 13 dry possessions. Canton scored 10 of the first 12 PI points. Kingsland went from zone to man to try to get some momentum going. The first Kingsland basket was a three by Brianna Kvanli at the 9:14 mark. Kingsland outscored PI 14-9 the rest of the half, but PI led 25-14.

After a Jade Nielsen basket on the second PI possession of the second half the game became "interesting." Kingsland showed the form that put them, for a time, in the top 10 poll. They scored five straight times and 6/7. to tie the game at 27. Leading the charge in this surge was Kvanli with 7 of the 13 points in the 13-0 run. There were 13 minutes left and all the mojo was on the Kingsland side. PI looked tenative, hesitant, and looked like they were playing not to lose. The 7 possession drought didn't help matters. Kingsland was more assertive and their defense along with their running game provided six of the points in that run. PI broke from the tie with free throws. Ashley Bergren made one and then two possessions later, Tina Maley scored twice at the stripe. PI then had another 7 possession drought. Kingsland's Emily Greiner scored on two straight lay ups to give Kingsland their first lead at 31-30. Kristy Partch scored on a post up to make it 33-30 for Kingsland with 8:00 left. Just as Kingsland climbed to the summit, they were struck by a 7 possession drought. Bergren made a free throw and then scored inside to tie it up at about the 2:40 mark. Greiner drove the lane, scored & was fouled. She converted the &1 for a 36-33 lead for Kingsland. That was to be the final points they would score. On the next PI possession, Katie Sorenson broke free on a back cut for a little lay up. Partch missed on the inside for Kingsland. while Sorenson turned it over for PI on the next possessions. Tallie Volkart stole the ball and was fouled. She missed the front end and Nielsen added to her rebound totals. She eventually was fouled inside. She made the first to tie it, but missed the second. Volkart rebounded and Kingsland called time out to set up the final shot. For the next 53.4 seconds Kingsland had possession. Most of the time Greiner had the ball at midcourt. Eventually she drove and kicked out to Sabatke in the left corner. She let it fly, but this game was destined for overtime.

It was back to the opening mode where PI took control. The Panthers won the tap and Canton was fouled on a drive. She scored her first points since the 11:30 mark of the first half with two free throws. Greiner missed on her shot, Nielsen, once again, picked up the board. In the only field goal in overtime Maley scored on a post up for PI. Kingsland didn't get anything generated on offense and was forced to foul. PI was 12/14 in overtime at the line. PI used that line advantage for a 8/10 sequence--a 140 pp100 and .800 floor %. Canton had 9 free throws in the extra session. The first #1 was out, and #5 Pine Island won their third overtime game in the last four contests. In fact their last four games have been wins by +2, +2, +2, and tonight's overtime win. Apparently they know how to win the tight ones.
