HIAWATHA VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP
CANNON FALLS bombers 39,
ROCHESTER LOURDES eagles 36

Jordan Montgomery hit a three from the top of the key as time expired to give Cannon Falls a dramatic first Hiawatha Valley Championship in three tries. Older sister Alex Montgomery led the way with 22 points. These two team may well see each other next Tuesday. Cannon Falls is #2 in the 1AA west subsection, and Lourdes is #3.

This conference championship featured deliberate, patient offense. Most of the possessions went two lines as offensives reversed the ball three or four times before settling for a shot. In the first half it was Lourdes using more clock on their possessions. CF took an 11-3 lead early with the one two punch of Alex Montgomery and Nicole Anderson providing all the points. Lourdes had a one punch. Post Laura Melquist scored the first nine points for Lourdes. Lourdes bounced back with an 8-2 run to close to 13-12. Neither team was able to generate any consistent attack. Neither team finished the first half with great pp100 numbers. Both CF and Lourdes checked in with a 4/11 sequence--a 36.4 pp100. Lourdes had three of those possessions end in turnovers, while CF ended up with five turnovers. It was 17-15 at the break for the home town Bombers.

Lourdes' offense to start the second half was caught in the same pattern. The first 8 possessions came up empty, again three ending up as turnovers. Stretching back over to the first half it made 12 scoreless possessions. Again the Alex Montgomery/Anderson connection gave CF a 25-15 lead. Lourdes took a time out at 13:26 to try to stop the CF momentum. Lourdes made several line up changes and three possessions later the spark returned to the offense. A three by Aubrey Neumann and then by Jessie Wilcken started a five possession scoring spree and a 12-4 run by the Eagles to make it 29-27 CF. Shelby Hanssen, a back up post, had four points in the RL resurgence. Alex Montgomery knocked down a trey from the left side to give CF a 32-27 lead. But again one of the periodic droughts struck both teams. Lourdes had a six possession dry spell, this time with three turnovers. CF also had a six empty trips. At the 3:24 mark Neumann was fouled on a three attempt for Lourdes and she drained all three. CF had a questionable shot selection on their next possession. Kayla Johnson got the board for RL and Mary Utz eventually drained a three on the left wing for the first RL lead of the night at 33-32. Alex Montgomery immediately answered with a drive. Both teams did not score on their next possessions. Claire Rieder made a steal and was fouled putting her at the line in the bonus. She made the first, but missed the second. Melquist snagged the offensive board and scored the put back for another Eagle lead at 36-34. Once again it was Alex Montgomery answering the call with a drive. She was fouled and made both charity tosses tying the game with 1:14 left. Lourdes had the ball and milked and milked the clock. Johnson was fouled with 21.8 ticks left by Anderson. However she missed her front end and Alex Montgomery made sure the board belonged to CF. This time the answer was made by another Montgomery---Jordan---as she nailed the dramatic three from the top of the key as time expired.
