HAWLEY nuggets 82
EAST GRAND FORKS green wave 68

This report is going to be bare bones for the time being. Hawley is 3 and a half hours away, and I just rolled in. I will get more details in later.
However I can tell you coach Teas & I saw a contest with plenty of action. It was tight until Hawley went on a 17-1 run in about 4 minutes in the middle of the second half. Hawley led 61-47 at that point and withstood a late EGF charge to 69-63 before pulling away again. Angie Jetvig of Hawley had 31 points.

Why Hawley/EGF? Well I work off lists. I try to see as many teams as possible. The attraction here was EGF was coming into Hawley so, according to MaxPreps, Hawley #23 was facing #39 EGF. Both teams have 20 wins. And since they both live in 8AA only one will get out, and the #1 team in AA, Crookston is still mad about not getting to state. So it was important to get up there. I had this on the calendar for a while and was hoping for decent weather. That worked out. Three and a half hours is a hike however. It does take its toll. We have to leave early and then we get back after midnight. But at 3 and a half hours, that was as close as EGF was going to come down.

If you don't know by now small town (in this case 2AA) ball is an event. It seemed as if the whole community was there. Coats are hung up in the lobby. The range of age at the games are diapers to 80s. There is pride in the home town and community you don't see in the larger schools during the season. The band was playing. There were sloppy joes and even malts at the concession stand. The gym is fairly new, and the lighting, according to coach Teas, was great. The one problem we had is we got there about 18 minutes before game time, but the prime time seats were already taken. We were able to sit in our favorite corner seats, but it was too close to the entry and that meant constant foot traffic back and forth disrupting our vision.

Both teams featured 6-2 players. Both hand athletic kids. Hawley has been to state, finishing second to Breck in 2004. Hawley is also in the top 10 in AA. In this game they would also set a new standard in floor % with .588, the highest this year. The average is .396 so you can see they were cooking with gas. EGF was also hot with a 100 pp100, the second time this year a team reached the century mark, but still lost.

Hawley scored right from the get go with a trey from Sam Spaeth in the left corner. The Nuggets had a 9-4 lead after a Jetvig put back. Then the had a four possession drought and that was all EGF needed to get back in the game. Briana Scanlan scored in transition and then from the left corner to stake a 10-9 lead for the Green Wave. There were nine lead changes and six ties in the first half. Just as the half started Spaeth ended it with a jumper to make it 32-30 Hawley at half. Jetvig had 18 points already at half.

Jetvig opened the second half with a three and then Jessica Amann scored after a Spaeth steal to make it 37-30 for the Nuggets. However EGF came back by going inside to their 6-2 soph Kate Warmack. She was fouled on &1 situations on consecutive plays to make it 37-36. A steal and lay up by Chelsey Frydenlund put the Green Wave up 38-37. It looked as if the pattern of the first half was repeating. There were three lead changes, and one tie. The last EGF lead came at 46-44 on a steal and lay up by Breanna Solheim. Hawley then went on their 17-1 run to make it 61-47. It started with a drive &1 by Amann. Spaeth chipped in 8 with a transition, a 3, and then an old fashioned three. With 7:45 Hawley was in the driver's seat. EGF would get as close as 69-63 with 2:20 left. However with Hawley scoring on all of their last 8 possessions it was going to be impossible to overcome that margin. Their was gold in the Nuggets with an 82-68 critical 8AA win.
