DEFENSE & TRUEHOOP
True Hoop examines the defense in the NBA and looks at Boston in particular. In the article Henry Abbott mentions the pp100 index for the true measure of how a team is performing on defense, not the points per game index.
If we look at the best pp100 on defense this year the best defense goes to Kimball with a 33.3 vs Swanville. However I would argue that it really isn't the Kimball defense being a brick wall, but Swanville casting up bricks instead. Offensive ineptitude clearly is a factor in the lower scores in high school.
The second best number belonged to Ada-Borup and I will agree that they played strong defense. They didn't allow too many second chances (a fault I see quite often). ABs number checks in a 52.56.
The samples this year are still pretty small to give a definitive thumbs up or down on defense. However last year the top of the line defense went to St. Paul Central who gave up 70.08 pp100 and we are talking against the likes of Cretin-Derham Hall, Mpls South, and Edina. Clearly this is where Central won and overwhelmed opponents last year.
Those on track for a 70 pp100 defensive rating this year include--Mpls South, Lakeville North in AAAA besides Ada-Borup in A. Keep paying attention to that pp100 on defense. The gold standard is 100 pp100 on offense, 70 on defense (If you want to be considered for the state champion)
