OSSEO orioles 72, CHAMPLIN PARK rebels 52
Two teams that made the state tournament last year battled it out in a Northwest Suburban contest with the visiting Orioles flying away with a 20 point win. Osseo used strong defense, quick ball movement, and an inside-outside combination that proved lethal. Danielle Mangen connected on five 3s on the night for the outside component. She ended up with 21 points. Jennie Sunnarborg patrolled the paint and had 14 of her 24 points at the line.
Mangen set the tone on the first Osseo possession with a trey from the right corner. CP did have one lead in the game and it came early at 5-3. The game remained fairly tight with the Orioles holding leads up to seven. CP came back to cut the margin to 17-13. One minute later it was 22-13 with a post up by Sunnarborg and a trey from Amy Hildebrand. Osseo closed the half with an 8-2 run as they scored on 4 of their last five possessions. That put Osseo up 34-22. Both Mangen and Sunnarborg had 11 at half.
CP changed from their 2/3 zone to man in the second half. That seemed to rejuvenated the Rebels as they opened with a 14-6 run to close the margin to 40-36. CP got the ball into the paint, something that was not happening frequently in the first half, and they also took advantage of a couple of 3s. Osseo weathered that storm and soon pushed the lead back out to 47-36 after a three staight scoring possessions. Osseo dominated inside and had one possession where they scored three free throws, one by Sunnarborg and then, after collecting the missed shot, two by Kylie Gottsman. Over 5:30 in the second half Osseo was 9/12 on their offensive possessions--a 16-7 run. Again Mangan kicked it off with a three. Sunnarborg closed it off with a post up. Osseo closed out the game with four straight scores on a 7-0 run.
