RED WING wingers 57, NORTHFIELD raiders 51

In the opening game of the Missota Conference season Red Wing rallied from a 10 point first half deficit to beat Northfield 57-51. Red Wing broke free from a 51 all tie with 1:30 to go to finish the deal.
Red Wing has yet to lose to a Minnesota team this season. Their record is 7-3. Northfield is now 7-2.

Red Wing led 8-5 early, but Northfield went on a 17-6 run to lead 24-14 with five minutes left. A six possession drought didn't help RW's cause. RW did start finding its groove late in the half with a 5/8 possession run. It would have been 6/8, but the last second deep 3, just across midcourt, by Jen Ulveling came after the horn. Northfield led at 28-24 at the break.

Northfield maintained their lead to 36-31 early in the second half. Then the Raiders hit a road block. They had a six possession drought, yet before that Northfield was stalling. They had a 1/10 sequence as RW went on a 9-2 run and took their first lead in the second half at 38-36 on Abby Ulveling's basket. 8 of 14 Northfield possessions ended up as turnovers in this sequence. Morgan Zabel made an old fashioned three point play to put Northfield back in front. All in all there were four ties in the second half. and seven lead changes. Northfield had a four possession sequence where they had a 10-5 run and they led 49-45 with 4:10 left. It was in the last lap that RW shined. The Wingers scored on 6 of their last 7 possessions. Hope Sevlie broke the 51 tie with a basket in the lane. Northfield was 0/5 in their last possessions, three of which ended in turnovers. The game was still in doubt with 20.9 seconds left. Olivia Johnson was fouled and she made her first free throw to make it 55-51, but missed her second. Megan Fleming scooped up the rebound for RW and eventually Johnson was fouled again. She delivered the final two points to put the game out of reach.
