CROOKSTON pirates 75, WINONA COTTER rambers 48
#1 AA Crookston showed why they are worthy of a high ranking with a strong performance against Winona Cotter. Crookston broke free from a 10 all tie with a 30-4 run in the first half. At the widest Crookston led by 31. This is the second straight year these two teams met, and Crookston took a measure of revenge against the Ramblers. Last year WC beat Crookston 58-56. Crookston is now 15-1 (there only loss to Fargo Shanley 63-62 when Wahlin did not play due to illness). Cotter is 13-5.
The start of the contest seemed to indicate this game would also be down to the wire. Both teams traded baskets. Cotter even led, the last time at 6-4. There were five ties, the last coming at 10 all. After that the Pirates, with their smothering defense, transition speed, and 3 point barage, captured the game. As I wrote in paragraph one, Crookston went on a 30-4 run. It all started off with a three from Bree Aamoth, her first of four 3s. In those 16 possessions Crookston was clicking at an astronomical 187.5 pp100. Cotter tried to stem the tide with three time outs to no avail. The one two punch of Kamille Wahlin and Taylor Davis provided 14 of the 30 points. Yet it was a total team effort. The defensive swarm forced 8 turnovers in that 16 possession sequence for Cotter. Crookston is not a normal AA team. They have depth. They can go three deep on their bench and not have a drop in ability. After Crookston hit 40 my pen ran dry and I had to use a new, different pen. Oddly enough that coincided with an eight possession drought. Furthermore, when I went back to the original black ink (instead of the blue substitute) Crookston scored on the next two possessions. The Pirates held sway at half 45-22. Davis had 13, Wahlin 11 at half. Jenny Gilbertson was keeping Cotter afloat with ten.
There was not very much drama in the second half. Cotter didn't connect for their first 8 possessions. Crookston, not to the same veracity in the first half, maintained a comfortable margin throughout. The widest spread came at 67-36, a 31 point differential with about 7 minutes left. Cotter did out score Crookston from that point on 12-8. The Ramblers did have a six possession scoring spree starting at the 8 minute mark, a 13-5 run. Gilbertson had 7 points in the run. The closest Cotter got was 67-45 with 4:30 left.
