NEW PRAGUE trojans 59, SIMLEY spartans 51

In a 1AAA battle it was an epic struggle between two warring Greek factions, but the Trojans prevailed over the Spartans 59-51. This was Simley's second straight loss. Simley had problems with their bus--it broke down on the way over to NP. The parents had to go out and get the players so the contest started a little late.

That ordeal didn't seem to slow Simley down at the start as the built up a 10-4 lead after trailing 4-0. The Spartans used balance as five different players scored. It was NP that had problems getting going. They had an 8 possession drought early on during the Simley run. Four of those possessions ended up as turnovers. NP was able to cut the margin to one a couple of times. NP took their next lead at 20-19 after two free throws by Kayla Gill. It was in the midst of a 10 possession dry spell for Simley. NP was on a 10-2 run to put the score 26-21. A Kassie Robinson three and a steal by Robinson and lay up by Sami Meyman tied the game up at half.

At the start of the second half NP scored their first three possessions to go up 31-28. The lead changed hands four times before NP took the lead for good. Maggie Weiers hit a turn around jumper to take a 35-34 advantage. Simley went through a six possession drought, five of which were turnovers. NP used that to push their lead out to 40-34. Simley tried to get back into the game closing to 49-45. The turnover bug reared its head on their next possession. They missed on a 15 footer on the next and the window of opportunity was closing. NP maintained that five point advantage the rest of the game. Again Simley had opportunities with NP up 54-49 with 53.5 seconds left. Again an offensive turnover, this time an offensive foul by Caitlin Aten stopped any chance. NP's Amanda Wagner made two free throws to put the game out of reach 57-49. Both teams added a basket by time expired for a serious comeback.

NP puts great pressure on the ball, they are athletic and they look to attack the paint, if the transition basket isn't there. Simley has size, but they like the perimeter more than the inside.
