ORONO spartans 53, DELANO tigers 41

In a showdown between undefeated (in conference) Wright County teams it was the host Orono Spartans beating Delano 53-41. Orono finished with a 13-0 run to close out the game. Delano did not score the last 7:30 of the contest.

These two highway 12 rivals struggled from the field early. Orono had the early advantage with a 6-0 advantage. Sarah Luse scored the first four points for Orono. Delano was mired in a 0/9 offensive sequence with four turnovers that didn't help matters. Sarah Bingea did score on three consecutive possessions to tie it up for Delano. Four of those points were the result of second chancers. Delano went on an 11-0 run to go up 19-12. The Tigers were 5/6 in their offense at that time. It was Orono's time to hibernate on offense with 6 empty trips. Finishing, a task that eluded Delano in the second half, also was missing in action in the first half. Delano led 21-16 when Orono finished with a 11-3 run. Delano was only 1/8 to finish the half. Orono, or Luse, crashed the offensive boards hard. She scored on four possessions in their run for 8 points, all on second chancers. Orono led 30-24 at half.

Chelsea Durland scored on the first possession to push Orono's lead to 8. Delano went on a 13-1 run to take a 37-33 lead. Bingea had 6 of the points in Delano's run. Orono was stuck in a 1/10 offensive sequence. Orono regained the lead after a drive by Durland and on the next possession drained a three. Delano grabbed their final lead at 41-40 with an elbow shot by Kelly Rensink. After that it was into the deep freeze with an unlucky 13 unrequited possessions. Four ended as turnovers, but they never got clean looks. Orono finished with a 13-0 run. Six of their eight scoring possession came at the line. Speaking of the line Delano did not make one free throw all night and only had two attempts. Orono made 13 for the night.
