ST. CLAIR cyclones 36

GHEC remained undefeated with a Valley Conference win over 2nd place St. Clair 50-36.

If it is Monday that means it is time to bring the "A" game. So it was off to St. Clair, a town east of Mankato and south of US 14. It was off the beaten path and I used Google maps to naviage my way there. Well we made turns on the county roads and some how, some way, found our way to St. Clair, but it was only through divine intervention.

This game featured two teams in the hunt for a Valley Conference championship and GHEC is one of the three class A teams left undefeated. The GHECers also have one of the taller class A line ups starting a 6-3, and 6-2 inside tandem. However at the start of the game both teams struggled to find the bottom of the basket as Coach Teas & I struggled to find St. Clair. GHEC was slightly above freezing with 35.3 pp100 and St. Clair was a frosty 25.0. For comparison sake Moorhead at the same point in the last game we saw was 135.3 pp100 and Buffalo 106.3.

The game didn't start off that way with Ashley Walterman scoring on the first GHEC possession. Neither team would score in the half court initial offense for the next 32 possessions. St. Clair suffered through droughts of 5, 7, and 6. GHEC endured a drought of 7. St. Clair played man and GHEC used their flex offense. They were getting looks at the elbows, but St. Clair gave the post players all the room in the world to shoot. Eventually the GHEC posts scored on three straight possessions to push their lead to 12-4. St. Clair scored on their own three possession mini-run to cut the martin to 12-10. GHEC pushed the lead back to 18-10, and Erin Goebel closed the gap with four straight points for St. Clair to make it 18-14 at the break. One thing that struck me was the second chances for both teams in the first half. They didn't necissarily take advantage of those situations, but they opportunities were there. St. Clair had one possession with six cracks, but not one fell. St. Clair really crashed the boards hard, but the GHEC size did not diminish with each additional attempt.

In the second half GHEC did a better job of eliminating multiple shot possessions by St. Clair. GHEC soon pushed the margin out to 29-16 as the Mustangs utilized their superior size with an 11-2 run. St. Clair wasn't helped by a five possession drought to start the half. Most of the half the GHEC lead was double digits, but St. Clair did have one kick where they cut down the margin to 40-33 after three straight scoring possessions, After that they went back to the freezer with a 1/9 offensive sequence to close the game.

St. Clair 36, 59, 61.0, .271
made 3s: St. Clair 4, GHEC 0
ftm/fta-ft%: GHEC 12/25-.480; 8/11-.727
bench: St. Clair 13, GHEC 6
If you discount the horrible start for GHEC (6, 17, 35.3, .176), they actually tested out quite nicely--104.5, .548.
St. Clair on the other hand, didn't heat up quite as much--74.4 and .326.
Another factor in the game for GHEC that needs to be address is the free throw %. With the posts getting fouled often, they will need to make the other squad pay for their crimes. Over half the free throw opportunities missed is not a good sign.
