PROVIDENCE lions 60,
ST. PAUL COMO PARK cougars 50

The Providence Lions roared over the Como Park Cougars 60-50. Providence led at halftime 27-22. They built it up to 35-22, held on when CP cut the margin to 39-35, and then put distance between their guests from St. Paul. Long time Blake and Breck head coach Ray Finley is an assistant at Providence. This game also had a Gopher connection. Dana Joubert Hayes is in her second year as head coach at Como Park ('92) and Jamie Broback is an assistant at Providence ('07).

The game started out with the first three possessions going for scores, two which were long distance. Latita Martin had a long 2 for Como Park and Samantha Zopfi had a three. It was 7-4 and then Providence sent in the next shift at 15:49. That pattern went on all night without any change in the groupings. Providence didn't score on the next 8 possessions. CP had a 8-2 run to take a 12-9 lead. Breanna Burkhalter had four points for the Cougars in the run. Como's last lead came at 16-15 after a rebound basket by Martin. That also was a trademark of this game Como relied quite a bit on second chancers. They scored 10 points via that route in the first half. Providence had 4 second chancers. At half Providence led 27-22.

Providence opened the second half with an 8-0 run to lead 35-22, their largest margin of the day. CP went through a six possession drought to start. Add on the last three possessions of the first half and they were 0/9. Como had their own 9-0 run near the 12 minute mark to close to 37-33. Providence also had their own six possession drought at the same time. Providence broke free from the 39-35 mark with another run, this time 9-0. That put them back at a 13 point advantage at 48-35. Yaasmiyn Salahu-Din crashed the offensive boards hard in the second half and had six straight points, all from second chancers. Como added 16 more second chance points in the second half. But Como could never close the gap and Providence took the game from the bigger class Cougars.
