In a battle between AAA teams, Mahtomedi trailed by seven in the first half 17-10 and closed with a 16-6 run to lead at half 26-23. In the second half the Zephyrs expanded that lead to 42-32 with 8:20 left only to see St. Anthony make a furious comeback and take a 43-42 lead with 4 minutes to go. Mahtomedi righted their ship and finished with a 53-45 win on the road.
Both teams initiated their scoring from behind the arc. Karen Myhrman struck first for St. Anthony followed on the next possession by Christine Briere. The game was tight early with four lead changes. Mahtomedi held a slim 10-9 advantage. St. Anthony got hot with a four of five sequence on a 8-0 run. 8th grader Ellie Zeller had four of the Husky points. Then Mahtomedi straightened out their kinks on offense and held St. Anthony to 8 empty possessions. 14 unanswered points put Mahtomedi out front 24-19. Morgan Wynveen hit three straight baskets for Mahtomedi in the run. She would flash to the free throw line from the left block, catch and score. Maureen Todd ended the St.A. drought with a weakside curl cut. Mahtomedi led at half 26-23.
Mahtomedi would test the margins at five a couple of times early in the second half. St. Anthony each time closed the gap again to one and two. Then St. Anthony suffered another drought, this time 10. Mahtomedi took advantage of the St. A. down time with 8-0 run to take a 42-32 lead with 8 minutes left. Jordyn Strege and Lauren Caswell each had four for Mahtomedi in the run. That is when St. Anthony started their comeback. They scored in four times in five possessions, the last three were all beyond the arc and with three different players connecting. The last 3 was made by Casey Gintner and StA had a 43-42 lead with four minutes left. StA would only score one more time in their last nine possessions. Mahtomedi on the other hand scored on five of their last six possessions, four of which came at the line. Strege had six free throws in the last minute.
