Out & About: Holy Family/Zimmerman
#7 posting 1.30.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information
HOLY FAMILY fire 65, ZIMMERMAN thunder 45
This game had no drama to speak of as HF had better athletes and better skills as they rolled to a 65-45 win at home. Both teams are in 4AA West so it was an important game for seeding, but both are in the middle of the pack. HF is now 11-8, while Zimmerman is 7-12.
HF built an 8-0 lead before Zimmerman scored. Zimmerman did not convert on their first 7 possessions, five on missed shots. Becca Friestleben hit a three to push the HF lead to 23-7. It was her second three and 10th point, but she soon picked up her third foul with 5:04 to go and sat the rest of the half. Zimmerman took advantage of her absence by finishing the half with a 16-9 run. They rattled off five straight scoring possessions after she left for the bench. Kaitlyn Houser and Lisa Swanson each had five during the run. Amanda Kari was fouled right at the buzzer and she converted one free throw to make it 32-23 HF.
Zimmerman stayed within 9 until the 15:01 mark. Then the Thunder turned to a whisper as they went on a nine possession drought. HF was on fire with a 5/6 possession run. The highlight was the transition lay up where Liz Traxler took a pass from Friesleben on the right side, caught it in mid air and scored without landing a la Miller twins. Zimmerman had one more drought in them with six, and a 1/10 sequence. By that time HF led 62-33 with 2:34 to go. Zimmerman finished with a 12-3 with two threes in the mix.
NUMBERS EXPLAINED
player, points, possessions, pp100, floor %
HOLY FAMILY
STARTERS
Becca Friestleben 18, 15, 120.0, .533 scoring is on her to do list. She has a quick release, and locks in on the rim. has good working relationship with Traxler. Hit her on a couple transition layups. strong, quick, physical, active and aggressive on defense. crashes offensive boards. can score when getting hit and make the 3 pt play. RF; needs to keep head up when dribbling, needs to develop left hand. picked up some fouls that could have been avoided. too high defensively on the weakside. needs to get her feet set or stopped so her balance is better on her shot.
Hanna Savaryn 8, 7, 114.3, .714 has nice stroke 12/15 feet out. fed Adie on a lob for a score.
Liz Traxler 9, 12, 75.0, .333 athletic, speed, point guard. runs the floor and converted with Friestleben the ally oop on transition. extremely active on defense with rebounds and steals. directed traffic, passed the high/low. RF: needs to get her footwork down. should get her feet set before shooting.
Kelly O'Brien 0, 1, 0.0, .000
Sarah Adie 16, 10, 160.0, .800 post player, seals well. gets good weakside position when teammates shoot.
BENCH

BENCH
Tessa Butau 4, 9, 44.4, .222
Lisa Swanson 7, 9, 77.8, .333 had 3 pointer. RF: needs to get faster, more stamina.
Morgan Anderson 0, 2, 0.0, .000
In general all Zimmerman players need to get stronger, faster, quicker. They need to work on their shot and ball handling.
TRENCH PLAYER
Becca Friestleben
BY THE NUMBERS
Holy Family 65, 72, 90.3, .458
Zimmerman 45, 72, 62.5, .319
made 3s: Zimmerman 4, HF 3
made fts: HF 14, Zimmerman 13
bench: HF 14, Zimmerman 11
Looking at the numbers the floor % wasn't even close. Too many droughts, but it really wasn't turnovers that hurt Zimmerman: it was the shot selection. Balance with the shooter and the rest of the floor is important. Some shots were taken with no weakside boards around. Also player range needs to come under consideration. Some took shots with their feet on the 3 point line.

GR's defense kept Brainerd off balance in the first half, and their possessions were squeezed in the half court game to better effect. Grand Rapids is 13-6 and in 3rd place in 7AAA. Brainerd is now 10-6 and in third place in 8AAAA. At this point I have seen all the +.500 AAAA squads. There is one team right at .500 that is on my to watch list.
Brainerd started out the game flat. They only scored twice in their first 19 possessions, 11 of which were turnovers. By the time they scored their third basket it was 17-4 GR. GR avoided droughts, and had one sequence of four consecutive scoring offensive possessions in a row and 5/6. In that sequence Ashley Runge had four points. In fact Brainerd trailed GR 21-6 with 3:42 to go in the half, or 3/27 scoring possessions. This translates into 11.1 pp100. But in the last 3:42 minutes Brainerd went on an 18-6 run and cut the deficit to 27-24. Kayla Huether delivered 7 of the points. The press was starting to kick in for Brainerd as they had six points on turnovers. GR had a pass deflected out of bounds with under 2 seconds left in the half. From mid court the ball went into Jessica Butler hands in the right corner behind the arc. She nailed the 3 at the buzzer to push the GR margin back to 30-24.
The start of the second half started just like the first one ended, with another three from Butler, then a turnover and a rebound basket by Erin Joki. Two possessions later Erin Joki scored on a pass from Katie McBride and was fouled. With the competion of the three point play it was GR up 38-24 a 11-0 run over two halves. For all intents & purposes the game was over at 16:11 to go. GR did push the lead up to 17 a couple of times, the last coming at 47-30. Brainerd had one last gasp and they closed to 54-45 on a 15-7 run. Huether again had six points to lead the run. From the five minute mark to the end of the game GR finished up with 8/10 scoring possessions and a 16-7 run. Butler started the late run with five points. The final was 70-53.

The Week That Was #10
#8 posting 1.28.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information
THE WEEK THAT WAS #10
Six games in six days, 2 down to the last possession.
One theme this week could be the comeback, especially late in the week. Worthington, and Champlin Park had to rally from double digit deficits. Tech had to rally from down in the second half. Cambridge mounted a furious rally late against STMA. Wayzata had the most comfortable game of the bunch this week.
I have now seen all but two of the +.500 teams in AAAA. I will probably see the other two teams this week.
BEST TEAM EVER
Let the debates begin. I have looked at 1997 Rochester Mayo with Kelly & Coco Miller; 1998 Minneapolis North with Tamara Moore, and Mauri Horton; Lakeville 2002 with Liz Podominick, and 2003 Woodbury with Katie Tacheny and Amanda Nisleit. We will compare them with St. Paul Central.
team, w-l, ppg, dpg, margin
Roch Mayo 27-0, 79.1, 50.3, 28.8
Mpls North 29-0 82.4, 35.1, 47.3
Lakeville 29-0 56.4, 37.6, 18.8
Woodbury 29-0 58.9, 37.9, 21.2
St. Paul Central 18-0, 83.3, 44.5
It must be remembered that the top four were playing 32 minute games. So North's ppg would bump up to 92.7. Right now their points scored record, and margin looks safe. Central won't cross the 100 mark and North did so a couple of times in 1998.
CLASS OF 2006
I was sent some interesting #s for the 2006 class & how they are faring in college right now. There are 26 that are rostered.
Five have a majority of starts so far
Player, HS team, College team
Abby Greene, Hopkins, Maine
Jessie Miller, Holy Angels, Illinois Chicago
Kelly Mullaney, Breck, Colorado State
Jenna Smith, Bloomington Kennedy, Illinois
Chelsea Frazier, Breck, Columbia.
Frazier didn't play her last year and a half in HS.
Seven players are over 20 minutes a game: with Emily Neal of Breck for Colorado State and Amy Beggin of Roseville for New Mexico joining the party.
Only two are over 10ppg---Mullaney and Smith.
Four have teams with winning records: Beggin, Greene, Miller and Smith.
If you look at the big 6 conferences only 3 players from 2006 are listed: Smith, Breanna Salley (St. Francis) Minnesota and Cory Montgomery (Cannon Falls) with Nebraska.
If you look at where these players are from Breck wins hands down for school with Mullaney, Neal, Frazier, and Givens (at Denver) all with D1 programs.
Top Class? 12 players are from AAAA, 8 from AAA, 7 from AA and none from A.
The top conference? Well with Breck supplying 4 it is the TriMetro with 5, with the Classic Lake, Lake and Suburban East all with 3.
We will look at the other classes in future weeks.
I don't know if the reader wants credit, so I'll just say thanks for your research.
TEAM OF THE WEEK.
Champlin Park has been showing their resilliance by rallying to win lately. Centennial had CP down by 17. But CP didn't panic and went about their business, chipping, and clawing back into the contest. Especially at the line. Their PP100 was right on 100. In the three games I have seen CP their ppg has climbed from 91.46 to 100. Earlier in the week they came back to beat Osseo 68-65.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
This should not come as a surprise. Champlin Park's Jenny Theisen ruled the free throw line with 18/18 against Centennial. That tied a state record. Theisen also had 29 points, nailed threes, and had a big hand in the 17 point comeback. Theisen leads CP with 16.2 ppg. This was her 4th 20 point game.
Again to make the team: 1. I need to see the player during the past week. 2. 10 possessions. 3. needs to be 100+ pp100 and +.500 in floor %. Again for the second week not all 10 players made the hurdles. I had to lower on a couple and they get the *.
First Team
Gabrielle Boever, Worthington
Allison Downs, Mankato West
Abby Rothenbuehler, Mankato West
Jordyn Sears, St. Cloud Tech
Jenny Theisen, Champlin Park
Second Team
Ashlynn Fuller, Champlin Park*
Kassie Hooten, Moorhead
Tess Milczark, Cambridge-Isanti*
Megan Nipe, Centennial
Monica Sykora, Cooper
Now you might say "what about the Wayzata players." Well their role players really tipped the scales that night, Braegelman and O'Toole topped both 100pp100 and floor%, but they didn't have the required possessions.
This is Nipe's third time on the All Week list. She was player of the week in week 1, and made the first team again in week 6.
DEFENSIVE SQUAD
These players get possession for the offense.
Gabrielle Boever, Worthington captain
Kiara Allums, Centennial
Ashlynn Fuller, Champlin Park
Joey Pipal, Mankato West
Brittany Wiese, St. Michael-Albertville
MY SEEDING RANKINGS
If these teams won their sections I would seed like this--

1 St. Paul Central--3
2 Minneapolis South--6
3 Champlin Park--7
4 Minnetonka---2
5 Lakeville North---1
6 Osseo---5
7 White Bear Lake--4
8 St. Cloud Tech--8
AAA
1 Benilde-St. Margaret's--5
2 Becker---4
3 DeLaSalle--3
4 Detroit Lakes--8
5 Marshall--2
6 Rogers--6
7 New Prague---1
8 Hibbing--7
AA and A teams will not seed the tournament.

Special Report: St. Paul Central/Armstrong
#9 posting 1.27.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information
SPECIAL REPORT
ST. PAUL CENTRAL 76, ARMSTRONG 36
This was going to be the game I went to at 7:30 tonight, but it was played at 1 pm this afternoon. Luckily I had a good source for this information.
Central led at half 43-19.
SPC was without the services of Ebony Black and Cyonna West.
Armstrong had 35 tunovervs against the SPC pressure defense.
SPC dominated the paint with 28 points compared to 12 for Armstrong.
SPC dominated the 3 line with 10 on the day.
If there was a flaw in the SPC stat category it was the fact they only cashed in at the charity stripe at 54.5% (12/22). They did however go to the line more often than Armstrong (9/15).
SPC's Angel Robinson led the way with 19 points, and added to her steal total with 4. Kiara Buford had 12, and DeAubrey Johnson had 11 for SPC. Nicole Dooher had 14 to lead Armstrong.
I will now go back and back fill the college information.
Next up: tomorrow morning
Out & About: St. Cloud Tech/Moorhead
#7 posting 1.27.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information
ST. CLOUD TECH tigers 56, MOORHEAD spuds 54
In a key 8AAAA battle for the top seed in the section, St. Cloud Tech edged Moorhead on Terin Euerle's basket on an out of bounds play with 5.8 seconds left in the contest.
Moorhead led early as they established their inside presence with Kassie Hooten. She had four of the first 7 Moorhead points as they led 7-2. SCT went on a 8-0 run to take the lead 10-7. Jordyn Sears had the first five points in the run. SCT was more effective with their possessions, as Moorhead was only able to squeeze one point off as they left 7 points at the line. SCT also took advantage of second chance points as they controlled the offensive boards. SCT had 8 points in the first half on second chancers. The lead hung around six points for most of the rest of the half. Moorhead was able to whittle it down to 21-17 after two free throws by Kelsey Jacobson. SCT pushed it back up to 26-17 for their largest lead in the first half. Hooten ended the scoring with a feed from Jenna Dolence to make it 26-19 at half. Hooten had 7 at half, Sears had 8.
Moorhead came out smoking in the second half scoring 8 of the first 9 times they had possession of the ball. Jacobson nailed a 3 and the run was on. When it was over Moorhead outscored SCT 17-5. Part of the change was a 1/3/1 zone employed by Moorhead. Moorhead grabbed the lead at 15:56 on two free throws by Tricia Vanyo. When the run was over they were up 36-31. Moorhead then went into a five possession drought. SCT figured out the weak spot in the 1/3/1 and started to roll again. They scored 7 of 8 possessions. They took a 46-43 lead on Sears' 3 from the right corner with 7:15 to go. Their full run was 19-7, and they led 50-43 with about four minutes to go. Then it was Moorhead's turn for a run and they converted on five of six possessions. Hooten was doing serious damage in the paint as she had 8 of the 11 points in the 11-4 run. Moorhead never had the lead at this point, but tied it at 52 and 54. Sears missed on a drive with less than 1:30 to go. Moorhead's Vanyo got the rebound. The Spuds worked it around and Vanyo was fouled. She missed both free throws, but Hooten was there for the rebound. She missed and the ball went out of bounds to SCT with 32 seconds left. SCT worked it down and took two time outs at 21 seconds. Sears drove again, but the ball was deflected out of bounds with 8.3 seconds left. On the ensuing out of bounds play Terin Euerle broke hard for the basket from the free throw line and beat her defender. She scored the final points. Moorhead took a time out with 5.8 seconds left. Jacobson was fouled right away, but they were not in the bonus at that point. Moorhead took another time out with 3.1 ticks left. The ball went to Dolence who had a decent look at the 3, but it missed.

STARTERS

Erin Foley 2, 5, 40.0, .200 point guard. did her job defensively on Jacobson. nice positioning. Her name won't be high on the D Wraps, but her defense was more of the denial/frustrating sort.

Alyssa Heine 4, 5, 80.0, .400 strong. rebounds. steady.

Ali Korf 6, 9, 66.7, .333 has speed, knocked ball from behind in a transition situation saving a lay up. RF: on ballhandling elbow too far away from body. also vision needs iimproving.

MOORHEAD
STARTERS
Kelsey Jacobson 12, 17, 70.6, .294 was at the point guard slot most of the day. 3 point specialist. their best shooter. RF: more of a "2", needs to develop a left hand on ball handling.
Tricia Vanyo 5, 7, 71.4, .429 scored on a drive. RF: foot speed. close out off balance.
Jenna Dolence 4, 5, 80.0, .400 RF: no block out on the weak side, too tight and was beat by Euerle on the game winner.
Gina Jaroszewski 9, 10, 90.0, .500 the "4" scored in the paint. RF: needs to be more physical. doesn't seal well on offense. too tight to the weak side on defense.
Kassie Hooten 21, 20, 105.0, .550 offensive minded. hooks defenders to free herself for shot. RF: took a shot in the first half just inside the 3 line. only 3 defensive wraps? and they were all in the first half. She needs to put the same energy into getting defensive rebounds.

Both teams were better in the second half. SCT's pp100s went from 78.9 to 107.1; while Moorhead's jumped from 59.4 to 120.7. Moorhead allowed 11 more second chance points including the last four in the second half. A total of 19 points because of failures to block out or not being aggressive on loose ball situations. SCT's man defense limited Moorhead and forced them to do things they may not have wanted. Moorhead did however get it inside to Hooten quite often. But the rest of the time they were working by themselves it seemed. Their offense more of a penetrate and dish.
