UW Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin
Memorial Day Classic
17U QUARTERFINALS
TEAM WI SELECT SAMUELS 55, HLC 36
Team WI Select Samuels had 29 points combined from Laura Petersen (14) and Nicole Griffin (15) in downing HLC in the semifinals of the Memorial Day tournament in Menomonie. Defense again propelled TWSS to the win. They held HLC to 63.2 pp100 for the game. For the year all teams combined are at 80.15 pp100 in AAU.
HLC held a brief 4-2 lead after two possessions. HLC had problems finding the bottom of the net with the size advantage TWSS possessed inside. They had droughts of 6, 10, and another 6 in the first half. Not that HLC was small. They had decent size, but just couldn't connect. A key break point came with a 14-0 TWSS run to push the score out to 29-9. It was 35-13 at halftime. Laura Petersen had all 14 of her points in the first stanza.
In the second half it was Nicole Griffin's turn to take over. She made on basket with her back to the rim and two HLCers crowding her that was the a "did you see that" moment. She finished with 8 in the second half. TWSS pushed their lead to 41-15. TWSS wasn't immune to droughts. They slipped into an 8 trip dry spell while HLC enjoyed a 9-0 run to make it 43-30. That was the last real push as TWSS was soon back to a 21 point margin.
TWSS was missing two players: Brea Tinney of Osceola who is headed to the Wisconsin State track meet in three events and Whitney Rawden of Eau Claire North.
