Cooper High School
Minnesota State AAU Tournament
14 CHAMPIONSHIPS
NORTH TARTAN 64, METRO STARS 52
North Tartan won three titles on Sunday and this was one of the titles as they beat Metro Stars 64-52. With 14s you are looking at many players that haven't made an impact on the varsity season...yet. Some players have had playing time and success at the high school level, but most are still waiting for their first time under the winter spotlight. This is the future. In general the things players need to work on are physical strength, ball handling decisions, plus consistency.
Both teams were fairly close in the beginning. There were 10 lead changes and five ties, the last coming at 23 all. That is when the game broke in a serious way for NT. In the last five minutes of the first half they went on a 20-8 tear. NT had a 9/10 offensive sequence with Jackie Johnson scoring 6 points and getting four defensive stops in the run. It was about the five minute mark when NT's Marissa Janning went down with what appeared to be a knee injury. There was no word yet on the severity. At half time NT led 43-31.
The high water mark for NT came in the second half with a 63-42 lead with 7:26 left after a pair of steals and lay ups by Elizabeth Lecy. The rest of the game NT only squeezed one point off their last 10 possessions. MS closed the gap, but the game was never in doubt. The odd thing about the second half was the one-two EP punch of Johnson and Shayne Mullaney who had a combined 24 points in the first half, only had 1 point combined in the second half.
Both teams had plenty of points on second chancers: NT had 24 points, 17 in the first half while MS had 16. Both totals indicate that rebounding, and blocking out need to improve if success at a national level is expected. Also NT made 16 free throws. MS took 11. Another factor in the NT win MS had 18 possessions that ended with a three attempt--made or missed, while NT had 9.
