Cooper High School
Minnesota State AAU Tournament
15u Pool Play
MN STARS JIHAD lady cats 63, GYM RATS 43
When Cats and Rats get together Cats usually prevail. That is what happened in the first 15u game I saw on Saturday. I hadn't seen either team yet this year. The Cats I am pretty familiar with having seen them numerous times last year, plus during their winter seasons. The Rats are from a wide range of Northern Minnesota.
The quickness, speed and aggressive pressing by the Cats took their toll on the Rats. The Rats had 25 turnovers. The Cats only had 10 on the night. The Cats jumped out early 11-3 scoring on five of their first seven possessions. The Cats, with their slashing, attack of the basket went to the line three times, twice on old fashioned three point plays, one of which was converted. The Cats then fell into a seven possession slumber where their shots wouldn't fall. The difference in this sequence, was the Cats only had one shot each time. In the interim the Rats edged back into the game closing to 11-10. The Cats went on to a 17-7 run to go up 28-17. That margin held up at half time 34-24 Cats. The Cats' Sarina Baker had 8 points at half time.
In the second half it was lay ups and 3s for the Cats. Aubrey Davis led the Cats 3 point barrage with a trio of triples. The Cats also added 10 points on transition lay ups. The Rats had 2 points on transition. The Cats started off hot with 4/5 scoring sequence as they pushed out to a 15 point lead. The Rats couldn't generate much offense and went seven possessions dry. The Cat margin kept increasing as the clock was winding down.
Missing: Erika Weimann, who was the Gym Rats primary point guard last year, wasn’t there due to a varsity softball tournament (she is a pitcher). Also 6-2 Ashley Feldman was hurt.
