MAPLE GROVE crimson 64, WAYZATA trojans 62

Maple Grove built an 11 point half time lead only to see Wayzata surge early in the second half to take a 44-40 lead. MG reasserted themselves and took a 58-48 lead only to see another Wayzata resurrection. The Trojans got as close as 61-60 with 46.8 seconds left. Free throws put the Crimson in the pink, the last two by Jennifer Field.

This was not the first choice for games today, but with traffic snarled due to snowflakes and delays of up to 2:30 hours going south on 169 we decided that this was the game to see. It turned out that it was the tightest game of the year.

Wayzata in the early portion of the game went inside with Christina Keup scoring the first six points after isolating defenders on her back. Wayzata in the half court swings the ball waiting for the right time. MG in the early going was led by the outside one two punch of Jen Field and Cate Cavanagh. together they combined for the first 12 Crimson points. MG went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. Wayzata was stuck in a six possession drought. The next burst took MG from a 21-19 lead to a 36-25 half time advantage--a 15-6 run. MG scored on 8 of their last 11 possessions of the half. Julie Kruse had six of the points.

MG stretched that lead to 40-25 to start the second half. Wayzata then started to press and started to penetrate on offense. That led to a 19-2 run. The Trojans scored on 7 straight possessions. Teresa Thour initiated the turnaround with 7 of the first 9 points in the run. Abby Doran had six points, one from behind the arc, and one old fashioned three. The run finished with Kate Thompson scoring the last six points. Thompson finally cracked into the scoring column with 12:44 left in the game. At that point Wayzata led 44-40. MG then awoke from their offensive slumber and scored on their next four possessions to reassert themselves and lead 47-44. Taylor House kicked off the MG comeback with move inside. Eventually MG pushed the lead to 58-48 with 4:11 left. Wayzata was mired in a 1/9 offensive morass. The snapped out of it to finish the game with a 7 of 8 scoring run, the first six in a row. Doran had six points in the 14-6 run. The Crimson fell into a four possession drought. Wayzata was able to slice the margin to one a couple of times, the last at 61-60. MG got their mojo back with four straight scores to close the contest--all at the line. Wayzata had an opportunity to tie the game at 62 but the drive by Doran didn't fall. House got the rebound and Field was fouled and provided the insurance points. Wayzata scored at the end with MG not contesting anything inside the 3 point line.
