FERGUS FALLS otters 39 overtime

4th game of 4.

#1 North Detroit Lakes had to go to overtime to dodge the Fergus Falls upset bid. These two familiar foes have battled each other three times this season with DL winning all three. But all three have been tight. The first DL win had the largest margin at 45-38. On Jan 30 DL edged FF 50-49. They needed another four minutes to finish the job tonight.

DL jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before FF scored on a Hannah Draxten drive, her only first half points. DL continued to run like a well oiled machine right up to a 23-10 lead with 7:22 left in the first half. But then the machine lost some of the oil and started freezing up. FF finished the half on a 9-2 run with all 9 points coming from the hand of Erin Morstad. DL still led at the half 25-19, but FF now had hope.

Susan Wellendorf scored twice to start the half and DL was forced to burn a time out at 16:43 with a 25-23 lead. Draxten tied it at 27, but FF never could take the lead. The game was tied again at 29. DL upped the margin to 33-29 on a post up by Betsy Hutcinson and then a pull up by Hallie Hoganson. Again DL tested the four point lead range, but Krista Shaikoski nailed a three from the right wing and FF was down 35-34 with 4:32 left. After a DL turnover, Draxten scored in the paint and the more numerous, and more spirited, FF fans erupted in jubilation with their first lead at 36-35. Jena Hanson scored on a drive to make it 37-36 win under 2:30 to go. At the 1:32 mark Draxten scored on a transition lay up after a steal by Amanda Lewis. Draxten was fouled and converted the three point play for a 39-37 FF lead. On the next DL possession Hallie Hoganson was fouled and she clamly sank two free throws to tie it at 39, the third tie of the game. FF worked the ball around and Lewis was fouled with 47.3 seconds left. She missed the one and one and Macey Bentley picked up the board for DL. They worked the clock down to 14.8 and took a time out. They didn't get a quality shot off and it was off to overtime.

Neither team scored on their first two possessions. Corey Lof of DL broke the ice with 1:50 left on a shot from the short left corner on a pass by Hallie Hoganson. FF turned the ball over and Hanson picked up the steal. On that possession Hanson was fouled. She missed both free throws and Lof got the offensive carom. When the ball came to Hanson again she launched a three which was not the shot for the time and score. Wellendorf rebounded for FF but another violation handed the ball back to DL with 53 seconds left. This possession had better score and time management. Abby Hoganson was fouled and made both free throws with 28.6 seconds left. DL added two more free throws. FF was shut out in overtime. DL moves on to face Perham on Friday at St. John's for the right to go to state.

DL is 23-3 with a loss to Becker and two more to Moorhead. FF finishes the year 17-11.
