Miss Basketball Preview

#1 posting 4.30.2006

MISS BASKETBALL
Tonight a new Miss Basketball will be named in Minnesota. Here are the five candidates in alphabetical order

  1. Anna Bjorlin, Hermantown
  2. Jessica Miller, Holy Angels
  3. Kelly Mullaney, Breck
  4. Jillian Schurle, Hopkins
  5. Jenna Smith, Bloomington Kennedy

This is the 28th time they will name a Miss Basketball. In that time some trends can be noticed. I do have to point out from 1985 through 1989 there were two Miss Basketballs, one for Class A and one for AA. That means there were 32 awards, but wait--Kelly and Coco Miller won in 1997 so there have technically been 33 Miss Basketball winners. Tonight will be #34.

First let us look at which class produces the most. AAAA has 14 winners, AAA 7, AA 6, A 6. This year there are 2 AAAA, 2 AAA, and 1 AA up for the award.

As far as the conference break down goes: The Lake has five winners; The Hiawatha Valley Gold has three (twice for Laurie Decker, the only underclass player to win in 1986, she also won her senior year in 1987). Six conferences have two winners including St. Paul, Minneapolis, Classic Lake and Suburban East along with the smaller independents and Three Rivers.

Denise Holm (Duluth East 1985) and Annie Adamczak (Moose Lake 1982) are the only northern players that have won the honor. 17 have come from the metro area, with 11 in the last 16 years.

18 of these Miss Basketball have been State Champions. Mullaney, Schurle and Smith fit that requirement.

29 winners have made it to the state tournament. All candidates this year have been in the state tournament. Only 4 past winners never made it to state: 1983-Angela Kuehn, MN Deaf; 1990-Carol Ann Shudlick, Apple Valley; 1993-Kasey Morlock, Stewartville; 2000-Susan King, Holy Angels.

As for post high school---my records only go back until 1990 on this and since that time 14 have gone on to DI programs in basketball, 2 have played at the DII level, and one (1995-Linda Shudlick) played volleyball at the DI level. This year four are headed for DI scholarships, Bjorlin will play softball at the DII level for Concordia St. Paul.

Now let us look at my numbers from throughout the year, and also how the "Basketball on Paper" numbers stack up. It must be understood that the BoP #s are only a fragment of the entire season. I will be using the All Star Game numbers in the mix for the BoP as well. name, games, Anderson #s, Oliver #s: pp100, Floor %

  1. Anna Bjorlin, 3, 79.2, 52.9, .235
  2. Jessica Miller 3, 67.53, 135.0, .575
  3. Kelly Mullaney 4, 72.33, 97.4, .455
  4. Jillian Schurle 10, 102.16, 132.71, .660
  5. Jenna Smith 8, 96.44, 120.91, .609

As you can see some numbers widely differ, some are quite consistent. Bjorlin did not have a great state tournament or all star series. Those are the three games on which her Oliver BoP #s are based. Miller only had the Orono game besides the all star series. Mullaney had the Marshall, and Mpls South games plus the all star series. I did see Miller against St. Paul Central early in the year prior to when I started the BoP #s. Same with Mullaney vs Champlin Park.

I saw last year's Miss Basketball Katie Ohm and fellow candidate and now teammate Ashley Ellis-Milan heading into Coffman Memorial Union on the University of Minnesota campus as I was heading out to the West Bank and Wilson library yesterday.
